Nearly 400,000 Australian workers have been given their share of more than half a billion dollars in unpaid wages and benefits.
The Fair Work Ombudsman said the record total of wages recovered – more than $532 million between 2021 and 22 – is three times the figure recorded last year.

Ms Hannah said it was ‘good news’ for workers and compliance businesses, with $297 million in total recoveries coming from large business owners.
“The Fair Work Ombudsman’s enforcement and compliance-enhancing approach has seen another record payback for Australian workers in the last financial year,” she said.
‘This is a great outcome for workers who have been reunited with their wages withheld, and also for businesses that pay right and are no longer disadvantaged.’
The Fair Work Ombudsman has conducted up to 50 investigations into large corporations that self-report for underpaying.

Some of Australia’s largest companies, such as Commonwealth Bank, Commsec and Coles supermarkets, are participating in active investigations.
AMP senior economist Diana Mousina said the figures showed ‘clearly’ there was a problem with Australian workers being underpaid.
