Fair Work Ombudsman reveals Australian workers lose record $532 million in unpaid wages


Nearly 400,000 Australian workers have been given their share of more than half a billion dollars in unpaid wages and benefits.

The Fair Work Ombudsman said the record total of wages recovered – more than $532 million between 2021 and 22 – is three times the figure recorded last year.

Deputy Fair Work Oagrmbudsman Kristen Hannah announced the record five in a speech at the Policy-Influence-Reform (PIR) conference in Canberra on Monday.

Ms Hannah said it was ‘good news’ for workers and compliance businesses, with $297 million in total recoveries coming from large business owners.

“The Fair Work Ombudsman’s enforcement and compliance-enhancing approach has seen another record payback for Australian workers in the last financial year,” she said.

‘This is a great outcome for workers who have been reunited with their wages withheld, and also for businesses that pay right and are no longer disadvantaged.’

The Fair Work Ombudsman has conducted up to 50 investigations into large corporations that self-report for underpaying.

The Fair Work Ombudsman is committed to continuing to support small businesses by providing more than 1200 relevant technical advice to employers.
