Faculty of Energy challenges students to make more efficient use of electric vehicles


Your future electric car could benefit from some schoolwork. The Department of Energy has partnered with GM and MathWorks to launch an EcoCAR Electric Vehicle Challenge that asked groups of students at 15 North American universities to develop more efficient electric vehicle technology. Will has students tinker with a Cadillac Lyriq for more than four years as they develop automation, connectivity and propulsion technology, and they are able to win annual awards based on their progress.

Teams are also expected to use a combination of sensor technology and connected cars to enable sharing of EV battery power. with houses“leisure use” (think camping) and the power grid. GM is offering these vehicles as part of a broader $6 million investment in the challenge.

EcoCAR begins this fall. American universities are spread across the country and include major institutions like Ohio State University, California Riverside University, and Virginia Tech. Canada’s McMaster University and the University of Waterloo (BlackBerry’s home ground) will also participate.

The challenge won’t guarantee longer range EVs. It does, however, reflect the Biden administration’s determination to make electric transportation possible, including support for American automakers, EV adoption goals and improved accessibility to charging stations. If all goes well, EcoCAR could help ease the transition away from gas-powered cars.
