Facebook is blocking posts about sending abortion pills in the mail

If you post about being able to mail abortion For those who need it on Facebook, don’t be surprised if you get a warning – or even have your account restricted. A tip told Motherboard that they were notified a minute after posting “I’ll mail the abortion pills to any of you” that their status update had been removed. When they tried to repost it later, they were banned for it. Motherboard was able to reproduce the scenario and we were also able to confirm it. We tried posting “abortion pills can be mailed” on Facebook and were quickly informed that we had violated the site’s Community Standards.

In the slide that follows explaining our breach, Facebook says it doesn’t allow users to buy, sell, or trade things like tobacco, marijuana, recreational drugs, and non-medical drugs. As proof, we posted “I’m selling cigarettes”, “cigarettes can be mailed”, “antidepressants can be mailed” and “pain relievers can be mailed”. sent by post.” None of them were flagged. Generic posts like “abortion is health care” are also not flagged. For our post that was flagged, we were asked if we wanted to accept Facebook’s enforcement action. After choosing to accept, our post was deleted but we were not banned. Based on Motherboardtheir account was restricted for 24 hours after making some flagged posts.

It’s unclear when the site started removing posts about sending abortion pills in the mail, and if it only started after the Supreme Court overturned it. Roe v. Wade. The Supreme Court decision made all forms of abortion illegal in some states with trigger laws, but people in those states can still get the abortion pill shipping them from international groups like Aid Access. Even so, Facebook can prevent that information from reaching some people who need it, especially because it flags posts with “mail” and “abortion pills” even to international users. We posted from outside the US and still got the warning. “Some items are not regulated everywhere,” reads our breach explanation slide, “but because Facebook is borderless, we have global standards that apply to everyone .”

The New York Times also recently reported that Facebook’s parent company, Meta, told employees no discussion judgment of the Supreme Court at work. Moderators are supposed to infiltrate and quickly delete posts about abortion in the company’s internal Workplace platform. However, Meta has told employees it will reimburse travel expenses if they need to access out-of-state reproductive and health care services “to the extent permitted by law.”
