Zhou Guanyu’s contract extension at Alfa Romeo has closed another door in the 2023 Formula 1 driving market – and made the remaining seats even more attractive to established stars and floating.

As a competitive market continues to take shape deep into the 2022 season, we’ve rounded up runners and riders for each seat as we move closer to a fully validated grid…

Alpine

Favourite: Pierre Gasly
Outsider: Jack Doohan, Antonio Giovinazzi, Mick Schumacher, Daniel Ricciardo, Nyck de Vries

After being shocked by Fernando Alonso and snubbed by Oscar Piastri, Alpine said they had a “14 riders” shortlist for the best seat available in 2023. But in truth, their eyes were always glued. enter Pierre Gasly.

Gasly makes sense for several reasons. He is French, still young (26 years old) but already has five seasons, and one race win, under his belt, and will likely run across the ground to form a very good squad. convenient with Esteban Ocon.

One thing is, he’s signed to Red Bull and is an important part of their sister team AlphaTauri.

Red Bull is willing to part with Gasly – for a fee – but will want a suitable replacement first (which we’ll cover in the next section).

Alpine, therefore, must have some alternatives.

Perhaps worried about another driving market’s gripping punch at missing out on Gasly, they tested three riders in a 2021 Alpine car last week at Hungaroring, Nyck de Vries, Jack Doohan and Antonio Giovinazzi.

De Vries is one of the hot items of his year driving market while Giovinazzi is more than likely to stay in the Ferrari family to return to F1, but it would not be surprising if Doohan is very high on the list. Alpine.

Alpine has wanted to get promoted from their driving academy for some time (with Piastri always the favorite), but Australian driver Doohan is currently fourth in his first season in Formula 2 and highly appreciated internally.

Daniel Ricciardo and Mick Schumacher are real outsiders for this seat.

Ricciardo hasn’t really been mentioned by Alpine since early August, with Renault bosses said to be uneasy about bringing the 33-year-old back, while Schumacher probably hasn’t done enough at Haas to get promotion.

AlphaTauri (if Gasly leaves)

AlphaTauri would ideally want Gasly, who only signed a new contract for 2023 in June, to stay. But with Gasly unlikely to return to Red Bull any time soon – he failed to impress the team during his brief stint in 2019 and Sergio Perez locked down for years – the senior team has Maybe try and get the French players compensation while they can.

This has always depended on finding a replacement, and with no junior driver making them F1’s next star through the Red Bull programme, they’ve had to look further.

IndyCar star Colton Herta is their number one target, though – despite winning seven races in the top US single-seater championship – he doesn’t have enough super points.

That downfall seemed to be only on Gasly’s side to stay, but a new frontrunner has emerged… that man De Vries.

De Vries, despite never racing F1, would fit Red Bull and AlphaTauri’s desire for a proven driver to compete for Gasly, and the Dutchman has admitted he has been in talks with the team’s transfer advisor Helmut Marko.

He seemed to be their only backup right now; If he doesn’t sign, Gasly will most likely stay.

Haas

Favourite: Antonio Giovinazzi
Outsider: Nico Hulkenberg, Mick Schumacher, Daniel Ricciardo

Haas is the wildcard in this driving market, and it’s hard to predict which direction they’re headed.

What seems certain is that the US team is seriously considering a move from Schumacher for 2023, with the German driver being shown by Kevin Magnussen this season. Schumacher is also set to leave the Ferrari driving program, and his connection to the Scuderia is one of the reasons he joined Haas in the first place.

GiovinazziFerrari’s reserve team and the man who said it was unlucky to lose his seat in Alfa Romeo this year has a lot of connections to the team, as well as another former F1 driver Nico Hulkenberg.

Those reports suggest Haas wants an experienced roster next year and is not interested in a rookie.

In case, Ricciardo can’t be ruled out either, and team boss Guenther Steiner has hinted at interest and talks.

Ricciardo will be the signing Haas have been waiting for since their F1 debut six years ago, and will be a huge success for Statesside. It remains to be seen, however, whether they have the budget or pedigree to attract Ricciardo, who has made it clear he is happy to spend a year on the sidelines in 2023 if the right opportunity doesn’t present itself.

Williams

Favourite: Nyck de Vries
Outsider: Sergeant Logan, Mick Schumacher, Antonio Giovinazzi

Nicholas Latifi’s impending exit leaves room for Williams, whose movement may depend on how the dominoes fall on the driver market.

Given his pedigree, and more importantly, how well he performed in Alex Albon’s absence from Italy, De Vries will certainly be Williams’ preferred choice. They could be beaten in this race by teams further afield, though perhaps they can rely on their relationship with Mercedes to secure their reserve team’s services.

Besides De Vries, Sergeant Logan is the name most frequently associated with Williams.

American driver Sargeant is Williams’ junior and is third on the F2 standings. He is said to be very good at Williams, the team with American owners, and will make his practice debut for the team at the United States GP next month.

Schumacher could be a driving force of interest if he leaves Haas – he has done enough in his two years in F1 to prove he belongs – while Giovinazzi also fits the bill of a solid driver next to Albon.

The reality is that the 2023 grid remains extremely unpredictable, even at the end of the season. However, significant developments are expected in the coming weeks.
