Explosions rock Kyiv in pre-dawn air attack : NPR


A series of explosions rang out before dawn on Wednesday in the Ukrainian capital Kiev. The mayor of the city said emergency workers had been dispatched to a location in central Kiev.

Residents woke up to the sound of air raid sirens at around 6am. The explosions occurred about 30 minutes later, part of a grim pattern that has become more familiar to Ukrainians nationwide since Russia began launching air strikes on the country’s power system more than Two months ago.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko said in a telegram Posted that Ukraine’s air defenses shot down 10 drones that were targeting the capital and the surrounding area.

He said emergency workers rushed to a location in Kiev, but did not provide further details.

With Russia facing defeat on the battlefield, the Russian military began large-scale airstrikes on civilian infrastructure on October 10. The attacks damaged many parts of the power grid. nationwide and resulted in daily power cuts across the country.

In the most recent attack, Russia shot down an Iranian-made drone, blacking out the southern port city of Odesa and much of the surrounding area.

Ukraine’s power companies quickly carried out repairs. But they say the damage is cumulative and the country cannot generate as much electricity as it needs this winter.
