The UN telecommunications body, which has chosen Doreen Bogdan-Martin as its next head, plays a key role in the rules governing radio frequencies, satellites and 5G.
The International Telecommunication Union will hold its main conference every four years until October 14 in Bucharest, at which member states have chosen the United States. ITU Bogdan-Martin senior executive to take the helm.
Here’s a look at the oldest agency in United Nation foldable, which behind the scenes sets the basic global standards for mobile phones, television and the internet.
– What the ITU does – It allocates global radio spectrum and satellite orbits and develops technical standards that ensure interconnected networks.
ITU was established to manage international telegraph networks but has expanded its scope to include new technology such as telephones, radio, television, satellite, mobile phones and the internet.
It brings together 193 member countries as well as about 900 international and regional companies, universities and organisations.
“Every time you make a cell phone call, access the internet or send an email, you are benefiting from the work of the ITU,” it said.

She said she was “ready to lead an ITU that will inspire, include and innovate, so that everyone, everywhere can harness the power of digital to transform their lives”.
History of ITU – ITU was founded in 1865. Twenty countries gathered at a conference in Paris to make cross-border communications more efficient, standardize telegraph equipment and establish unified operating instructions.
It established”SOS“as Morse international maritime distress call code of 1906. After the shipwreck Titanic In 1912, a common wavelength was agreed for ship radio distress signals.
Its headquarters were moved in 1948 from Bern to Geneva, where today it is housed in a 15-story pentagonal silver tower near the UN Palais des Nations. It joined the United Nations in 1949.
– TV, mobile phones, internet – The first ITU TV specifications were released in 1949. Today more than 150 standards cover the broadcasting of audio and video to a multitude of devices.
In 2000, specifications for 3G systems were agreed, allowing for the first time fully interoperable mobile systems, laying the foundation for high-speed wireless devices that could handle manage voice and data connections to the internet.
The ITU says the Internet’s expansion from the original modem to broadband depends heavily on its standards.
Climate change is currently a major theme of ITU’s work, particularly through satellite-based weather monitoring and disaster warning systems.
– How ITU is run and funded – ITU’s work is divided into three branches: radio communication, standardization and development.
A regionally balanced 48-member board serves as its governing body.
The ITU’s total budget revenue for 2021 is approximately 164 million Swiss francs ($165 million), of which 76% comes from membership fees – including 66% from countries – with the remainder coming from “the cost-offering activities”: sales of publications, subscriptions and filing fees for radio communications.
