Explained: How Microsoft is planning to take over Facebook with this new app

Microsoft introduced a new app called Viva Engage at its annual Inspire event. The app is part of the tech giant’s plan to expand its footprint Viva employee experience platform. The company is promoting Viva Engagement app as a community service based social community app for Teams. However, Microsoft has also confirmed that the new app will not replace Yammer. The company recently updated its blog post to mention that “the original and Yammer web experience Yammer mobile apps will continue to be part of the Microsoft 365 SKU and communities, stories, and stories offered through both Yammer and the new Viva Engage apps. ” Microsoft also added that it will continue to invest in Yammer and “bring the power of Yammer to Microsoft 365 and Viva.”
Availability of new Microsoft Viva Engage apps
The company wants to make Engage available to all existing Microsoft 365 commercial customers at no additional cost. However, users need a Yammer license to access the app. As reported by ZDNet, Microsoft officials also shared the company’s plans to rename the Community app for Teams to “Viva Engage” within the next month. Just like the Community app, the Viva Engage app will also be available in the Teams mobile app for both iOS and Android.
What is Viva Employee Experience Kit?
You can find the Viva employee experience suite in the Teams video calling app which now includes tools like – Viva Learn, Viva Topics, Connect Viva and Viva Goals. According to the report, Microsoft officials have stated that the company is planning to incorporate Glint HR tools into the Viva suite by 2023. Additionally, Microsoft has also renamed a new CRM companion app to Viva Sales, however, is not part of the Viva Suite.
Difference between Viva Connections and Viva Engage
Viva Connections is also based on Yammer and is designed to deliver – news, conversations, and resources, which can be a bit confusing for users because the new Engage apps seem to do the same job. The report clarifies (as Microsoft officials put it) that “Viva Connections is about connecting employees to company resources while Viva Engage is more about connecting employees,” along with providing offers leaders “new ways to engage in dialogue with employees”.
How Viva Engage will work on Facebook
In addition to news and conversations from both colleagues and organizations, Microsoft is adding a number of personal expression tools to Engage apps that are also part of the Viva community experience. These tools include – Plot, Story and Video Clip.
Tools Plot and Story Based on OneDrive for Business and Microsoft’s Stream video service. According to the report, Microsoft officials mentioned that Stories in the app would be similar to the feature found on other social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, where users can quickly share and upload short videos or photos.
Storylines, on the other hand, will allow users to create posts with – links, files, photos and videos that will be available to them in – Viva Connections, Outlook, Teams and Yammer. Furthermore, the feed of these posts will be available in the new Story tab.
Finally, the Video Clip tool will use Stream technology, but it will be separate from Microsoft’s Clipchamp video production technology. This tool will make it easy for users to record and send short video messages in Group Chat. The report also mentions that the Video Clip tool will be previewed in August and is expected to be widely available in September.
