Experts say recurrent dengue increases risk of complications by 50% and insist on IgG testing

Repeat dengue This increases the risk of complications by 50% and recommends three key tests to determine the severity and intensity of the infection, says Dr Nihar Parekh, a pediatrician.

The expert took to Instagram to share important dengue tests and symptoms to watch out for.

In addition to NS1, the expert said in a video shared on the social media platform, one should also check IgG and IgM levels to look for dengue.

Regarding the importance of these tests, the expert explained: While NS1 is a common dengue test that indicates whether an individual has been infected with the virus, IgG and IgM levels actually decode levels. severity of the disease.

The NS1 test detects the non-structural protein NS1 of the dengue virus. During infection, this protein is secreted into the blood of the individual. This protein can be detected during the first 7 days of infection, which is not recommended.

IgM or immunoglobulin M is released into the bloodstream during infection. The US CDC says: “As the immune system fights the infection, IgM antibodies against the dengue virus can be detected starting 4-5 days after the onset of symptoms and may be present. detectable in about 12 weeks.

The IgG test, cited by Dr Parekh as the most important part of dengue testing and diagnosis, is a test for antibodies that are released after the 14th day of infection and remain in the body for a period of time. longer time.

Why is the IgG test important?
A positive IgG test means that the person has been previously infected with the dengue virus and has been re-infected. “After you recover from dengue, you have long-term immunity to the infected virus – but not to the other three dengue viruses. This means you can become infected. in the future by one of the other three viruses. Your risk of developing severe dengue is increased if you get dengue a second, third or fourth time,” experts at MayoClinic said.

Dengue fever is caused by the mosquito Aedes aegypti through transmission of the Dengue virus or DENV. The four different dengue viruses are: (DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3 and DENV-4. They belong to the Flaviviridae family.

Recovery from an infection can only provide immunity to that virus. Cross-immunity is not seen in dengue cases. The World Health Organization (WHO) said: “Cross immunity to other serotypes after recovery is only partial and temporary. Subsequent infections (secondary infections) by serotypes other increases the risk of developing severe dengue.

Dr Parekh said the IgG test will determine if this is a second, third or fourth episode of dengue, although previous episodes were mild and undiagnosed, Dr. Parekh stressed the importance of testing. experience.

Common symptoms of dengue fever
Common symptoms of dengue are fever for 3-5 days, fever fracture, headache, body pain, rash all over the body even though it comes a little late, pain behind the eyes.

Symptoms of dengue fever persist for about a week. Most people recover within a week of infection.

In a special message to parents, Dr Parekh advised them not to panic if a blood test is positive for dengue. “A positive report for dengue does not mean your child needs to be hospitalized, don’t panic,” the expert said.

Dengue fever

The global prevalence of dengue has increased dramatically, with about half of the world’s population at risk, the WHO said. Although an estimated 100-400 million infections occur. each year, more than 80% are generally mild and asymptomatic.

Until July 2022, the nation’s capital Delhi has reported more than 150 cases of dengue. As of August 31, the country has a total of 30627 dengue cases along with 12 deaths. In 2011, the total number of cases was 193245 and the death toll was 346.
