Exclusive Magic: New Capenna Preview Card’s Collecting Street

The sequel to Magic: The Gathering takes players to New Capenna, a city controlled by five very different but very dangerous criminal families led by demons. Each variety has a special flavor you can learn about preview of the series from last week. For our exclusive preview card provided by Wizards of the Coast, this Cabaretti reveler is delivering venomous snakes to everyone at the party. Everyone has one of those friends; you know one.

The Art of Marta Nael

Venom Connoisseur is a 2/2 Human Druid for 1G at Uncommon using the ability word “Alliance”. The rule text on the card reads: “Whenever another creature enters the battlefield under your control, the Venom Connoisseur gains death induction until the end of the turn. If this is the second possibility, the Venom Connoisseur will receive death induction until the end of the turn. This ability is resolved this turn, all creatures you control will have death induction until the end of the spin.” In the card’s wonderful illustrations, the artist Marta Nael Bring this charming snake to life.

In limited decks, if you’re on a full Cabaretti plan of going wide, activating Venom Connoisseur’s ability twice to get the whole team to hit the deathblow shouldn’t be difficult to achieve and will create a number of spicy hits on your opponent. If there are easy ways to drop creatures on the battlefield on your opponent’s turn, you can also create some surprising and devastating blocks. Like the saying goes: “Each person only takes two tangos with deathtouch” or something like that…

Zooming in on the 60-card in-built format, my mind immediately turned to my pet cards from Kaldheim, Fynn, Fangbearer. His ability allows your death-sensing creatures to give your opponent two poison counters if their damage goes through them, and if someone has 10 or more poison counters, they lose game. The problem with building a deck around Fynn is that you need to have loads of death-sensing creatures in the deck to land the Infect’s satisfying victory. With Venom Connoisseur, the barrier to entering the deck has both dropped dramatically and opens up decks with more colors to play with and more utility. Use cards continuously and repeatedly to craft creatures like Scute Swarm, Join the Dance, Clarion Spirit or various cards to craft Zombie Decayed cards from Midnight Hunt that will keep your faction alive Full and more importantly, threaten lethal contagion damage all the time from your death squad if Fynn is on the board.

That’s just the surface of what Venom Coinnesseur can do and we should be able to see it in action in just a few short weeks. Streets of New Capenna Prerelease begins April 22, with the full set released April 29. It will be available digitally on Magic: The Gathering Arena and Magic Online on April 28. Thanks to Wizards of the Coast for including Game informant in preview the part again.
