Ex-OpenAI Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever launches ‘safe’ AI company: Will it compete with OpenAI?
OpenAI co-founder and former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever has founded a new AI company called Safe Super Intelligence (SSI), just one month after leaving OpenAI.
According to the company’s X account, creating a secure superintelligence is “the most important technical problem of our time,” and this mission is the reason the secure Superintelligence exists.

Safety is Ilya Sutskever’s top priority
Sutskever is known for his differences with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. During his time on the board of directors, he even led the charge to fire Altman late last year.
Reports mentioned that the rift between the two top executives was widening because Sutskever was unhappy with the rapid pace of AI development. This is a topic discussed by both experts and the public, highlighting concerns that the rapid advancement of AI could harm humanity in the long run.

Now, with his new company, Sutskever plans to do things differently, hence the name Safety Super Intelligence. “SSI is our mission, our name and our entire product roadmap, because that is our sole focus. Our team, investors and business model are all well-suited to achieve SSI,” the company said on X.
It added, “We approach safety and capability in tandem, as technical problems need to be solved through revolutionary scientific and engineering breakthroughs. We plan to ramp up capacity as quickly as possible while ensuring our safety always comes first. This way, we can scale up peacefully.”
Meaning of OpenAI
Entering the AI space naturally makes OpenAI and SSI rivals, but this doesn’t mean the competition will heat up any time soon. OpenAI has many years of experience and stable products such as GPT-4 and GPT-4.0. Furthermore, OpenAI’s partnerships with companies like Apple are expected to drive further growth.

Meanwhile, speaking to Bloomberg, Sutskever mentioned that he won’t do anything else with the company until he achieves secure superintelligence. The key word here is “safe,” so it may be a while before we see any mass products from this new AI company.
