EU strikes agreement to ban combustion engine cars by 2035

The EU has reached an agreement on legislation to phase out new CO2-emitting vehicles gradually by 2035, in favor of all-electric models.

The EU has reached an agreement on legislation to phase out new CO2-emitting vehicles gradually by 2035, in favor of all-electric models.

The European Union on Thursday reached an agreement on legislation to phase out new CO2– Have a car by 2035, the negotiators announced.

Negotiations between representatives of the European Council, before the 27 member states and the European Parliament began on Thursday and underpin the bloc’s transition towards a carbon-neutral future.

“We have just concluded negotiations on CO2 standards for cars,” tweeted French MEP Pascal Canfin, head of the European parliament’s environment committee.

“The historic (EU) decision on climate clearly confirms the target of 100% zero-emission vehicles by 2035 with intermediate periods from 2025 to 2030.”

Cars currently account for about 15% of total CO2 emissions in the EU, while transport in general accounts for about a quarter.

Written consent, based on a proposal by the EU executive body in July 2021, calls for a reduction in CO2 emissions from new cars in Europe to zero by 2035.

What this means in practice is that the sale of new petrol and diesel cars, light commercial vehicles and hybrids in the block at the time, benefits all –tram.

European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen hailed the agreement as “an important milestone towards achieving our 2030 climate target”.

There is an exemption for “appropriate” manufacturers or those that produce fewer than 10,000 vehicles per year.

Sometimes called a “Ferrari modification” because it would be beneficial high end brand In particular, these vehicles are allowed to be equipped with internal combustion engine by the end of 2035.

‘Foresight’

BMW CEO Oliver Zipse, and president of the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), said the decision was “extremely far-reaching”.

“Make no mistake, the European auto industry is facing the challenge of delivering these zero-emissions cars and trucks,” he said.

But more needs to be done for the industry to achieve this goal, Zipse added, such as having “abundant sources of renewable energy, a seamless network of public and private charging infrastructure, and the ability to access to raw materials”.

In June, the European Parliament voted in favor of a 2035 ban on all vehicles with internal combustion engine.

Conservative and German MEPs have shown reluctance towards some targets, fearing the costly burden they will place on EU carmakers competing with global rivals with targets looser.

Currently, around 12% of new cars sold in the European Union are electric, with consumers moving towards CO2-eming pattern like Electricity bill and greener traffic regulations bite.

Meanwhile, China – the world’s largest auto market – wants at least half of new cars to be electric, plug-in hybrid or hydrogen powered by 2035.
