Essex lorry deaths: Man charged with 39 counts of manslaughter to appear in court today | UK News

A man wanted in connection with the deaths of 39 people found in the back of an Essex lorry will appear in court this morning.

Marius Mihai Draghici is suspected of being part of a plot leading to the death of a Vietnamese citizen, whose body was discovered in the back of a truck on October 23, 2019.

The 49-year-old was detained by Romanian police in August and later extradited to the UK.

It follows the enforcement of a European Arrest Order.

He is currently in the custody of Essex Police and has been charged with 39 counts of manslaughter and conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration. He will appear at Chelmsford Magistrates Court this morning, Saturday 29 October.

The charges come a week after the three-year anniversary of the tragic incident.

The temperature inside the container has reached 38.5C (101.3F) after migrants paid smugglers more than £10,000 each to get to the UK.

The truck had traveled from Zeebrugge in Belgium to Purfleet Harbor in Essex.
