Eric Staal Named Captain of the 2022 Canadian Olympic Team

Hockey Canada has announced the leadership team for the upcoming Olympic Games, with Eric Staal
The obvious choice is captain of the club. He will be joined by David Deshanais and Maxim Noreau to replace.

Staal, 37, had appeared at the Olympics before when the NHL was still participating. A member of the 2010 gold medal winning team in Vancouver, the veteran forward has been part of the exclusive Triple Gold Club, with Olympic gold, world championship gold and a Stanley Cup championship . This is his second time captaining Team Canada, also the “C” team in 2013 at Worlds.

With talent scattered across the team, Staal will always be the captain as he brings more experience than anyone else. He could very well skate with a junior of almost two decades if Mason McTavish can work his way in the squad. He’ll have another veteran striker to lean on either way, as Desharnais received an “A” after three stellar years in Switzerland. The 35-year-old has had a strong NHL career of his own, picking up 282 points in 524 career games.

Noreau, a player who may be less familiar to NHL fans as he played just six games with the Minnesota Wild over a decade ago, is the other replacement after a long successful career in Switzerland. He was also a returning member of the 2018 Olympic team, where he also wore an “A” on his way to winning bronze. The 34-year-old defender is likely to play a role in power play thanks to his attacking skill set, despite his young age Owen Power capable of playing in all situations, even with human advantage.

Meanwhile, the match that started before Canada’s tournament in Switzerland before heading to Beijing was canceled due to COVID concerns for EV Zug, the scheduled opponent. For Staal and his team, the tournament kicks off on February 10.
