Even money EPICENTER (c, 3, Not this time–Silent Candy, by Candy Ride {Arg}) was forced to show a different side during Saturday’s GII Twinspires.com Louisiana Derby, but the result was the same. Entering the event after a convincing success in GII Risen Star S. On February 19, black fish athlete Winchell Thoroughbreds placed third as ‘TDN Rising Star’ Zandon (Munnings) went to the front. Epicenter seemed a bit stubborn in the short term, but quickly settled in and spilled paint when Pioneer of Medina (Pioneerof the Nile) broke out before the race pressed Zandon. Joel Rosario guided Epicenter to the field very clearly as they approached the long stretch of Fair Grounds and stepped on the gas in the lane to pull it out 2 1/4 lengths. Zandon and Pioneer of Medina hold second and third place, respectively. The winner completed the rare 1 3/16 mile run in a record time of 1:54.38. Coaches Steve Asmussen and Winchell are represented by GII Fair Grounds Oaks heroine Echo Zulu (Gunman) before a race. Sales history: $260,000 ylg ’20 KEESEP. Lifetime record: 6-4-1-0.
