Epicenter gives Asmussen, Rosario a First Trader Victory

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – After leading the sophomore men’s team through the winter and early spring, The epicenter (Not this time) finished in second place as the most popular team in the first two legs of the Triple Crown. Losing no flash in those losses, black athlete Winchell Thoroughbreds recovered with a decisive GII score Jim Dandy S.

Epicenter just made it that Saturday with a high score in the prestigious GI Runhappy Travers S. in front of an enthusiastic crowd of 49,672, the largest number since American pharoah This was the first win in the Saratoga feature for both coach Steve Asmussen and jockey Joel Rosario.

Epicenter couldn’t have had a better setting for his career at the pinnacle between New York’s most famous racing venue history and a picturesque, sunny, and 75-degree day. His relationships aren’t the only ones who believe Saturday is pony day and he’s been left out of the even-money favorites game.

Leaving booth sixth in good order, Epicenter established a spot in the joint third alongside the Preakness winner Vote early (Gunman) goes on first turn. He hugs the fence as the winner of the GI Haskell Invitational S. Cyberknife (Gunman) pressed by longshot Ain’t Life Grand (Not this time) through the original fractions of: 23.32 and: 47.63.

Immediately after three-quarters rose in 1:11.43, Cyberknife jumped off its enemies and both Ain’t Life Grand and Early Voting called it a day. The GI Arkansas Derby winner’s clear lead, however, didn’t last long as Epicenter pushed hard outside and the stage was set as the two headed home together.

Running three lanes wide, Epicenter passed easily under a strong lead from Joel Rosario, who crossed his right shoulder multiple times in the final 1/8 mile. However, he had nothing to worry about. Cyberknife gave it all he had, but never threatened the winner, who hit a clear 5 1/4 length line. He is determined to keep the second place, just one step ahead of the runner-up Jim Dandy Zandon (Start up), who threw his head back at the Derby winner Rich Strike (Keen Ice).

“It was really gratifying,” Asmussen said. “We went into this day with extreme confidence in the horse, but certainly remember we feel exactly the same way going into this year’s Derby. He came out clean and thought he was comfortable and attended close enough to the pace, and just had a very dominating performance against a very good group. “

The Hall of Famer continued, “Back then, there was a lot of concern about who would take the lead. Early voting seems to be the fastest, but they certainly don’t want to take the lead this time. Also, there is a concern as to how much speed there will be, but Joel [Rosario] processed Epicenter. He played clean and on the rhythm he wanted to be in and I think he finished very strong a mile and a half. “

On winning his first Travers, Asmussen said, “It was really fun at Saratoga, coming from a racing family. What Saratoga means to American racing, what Travers means to Saratoga. I want to help paint the canoe. Saratoga is about tradition. Racing is about tradition. Having your name on that cup is very special. “

“As long as I can remember, the history of Saratoga and the horses my family has run over the years, Travers has always been a marquee race,” said Ron Winchell. “Come here with Gunman and third place and Midnight Bourbon second last year, it just makes you want to win more. It makes winning this race that much more special for myself and my family. “

The owner added, “One of the reasons Steve mentioned our coming here was to know that we ran second in the Derby and Preakness and were one of the few horses – the favorite – and no class I. This was a very natural step of where we had to go. We had to beat some of the best in our class to win the championship and get to one of our goals.”

“He broke very well. It was a good ride,” said Rosario. “I was just following those two horses in the lead. I was in there and I just wanted to spend my time with where he is. He looked like he was going at a pace and then he kept building and building and building and I felt pretty good going home. I could see him relaxing and looking around and I felt like I had more of it, so it felt great. “

On winning a record 12th place in a single season at Saratoga, Rosario said, “It’s been amazing. I have a great agent. Ron Anderson is amazing and I have to thank him and everyone for all the opportunities they have given me.”

As for Cyberknife runner-up, coach Brad Cox said: “I can’t guess what anyone else will do but I know we’re not going to take anything easy and we did it easy enough. We are the second best horse today. At a mile and a half, I think the horse really fought and fought the second, held on, and I’m very, very proud of our horse. I think he trained well for the lead and he ran a big race. When I see three-quarters out of eleven, I think that’s great, we’re in a good position here. Obviously, once I see Joel advance as easily as he does, I think this will [difficult], once they straightened, I thought ‘we’ve got a shot here’, but you can tell he’s getting a little bit away from us. He is a very good horse. Hats to the winners, they deserve it. We came in second and I’m so proud of our horse. “

Formation of a potential eclipse season – worth the…

Graduating in second place with a claim to go a mile at Churchill on November 13, Epicenter dominates Gunman S. next at the Fair Grounds on December 26, a fitting victory for the race named for his connections Horse of the Year.
