NEW DELHI: The Central Consumer Protection Agency (CCPA) has written to county chief clerks and cash collectors to ensure immediate implementation of guidelines banning hotels and restaurants from adding non-service to the food bill. The agency said up to 85 complaints were registered on the national consumer helpline, after new guidance was issued on July 4.
The top five cities where complaints were received were Delhi (18), Bengaluru (15), Mumbai (11), Pune (4) and Ghaziabad (3). CCPA Chief Commissioner Nidhi Khare said the guidelines were “not advisory in nature” and “fully enforceable under the law” as they were issued under the Consumer Protection Act.
In a statement, the Department of Consumer Affairs said the Consumer Protection Act 2019, which took effect in July 2020, created a new regulatory body – the CCPA – that has been empowered by Parliament to be aware of unfair trade practices. Any violation of its principles will be taken seriously and appropriate action will be taken.
