Leah Williamson lifts the European Championship trophy aloft

As England celebrate lifting their first major league trophy with a crowd of 87,000 inside Wembley Stadium, we take a look at who shined for the Lions during their crowning at Wembley Stadium. Euro 2022.

Mary Earps – 9

Command her box brilliantly, as she has completed all the tournaments. Her tackle was so impressive that it reduced the German air threat to nothing. That was certainly boosted when Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s side lost Alexandra Popp to injury in the warm-up, but Earps still had a big job to do to stop a string of dangerous German players. She consistently coordinated her backline and conceded only twice in the entire tournament, cementing her position as England’s No 1.

Millie Bright – 8

Yet another sure-fire match for the towering England centre-back, despite being caught to equalize for Germany. Lina Magull finished ahead of her in the near post to let in the home goal from Tabea Wassmuth. But the goal could not be scored thanks to the Chelsea defender, it was the product of constant German pressure combined with complex play from Wassmuth and a precise run from Magull – the player supposed to be his Germany of the tournament. Bright is a symbol of the solid backbone of England and will be the mainstay of the team for the upcoming tournaments.

Leah Williamson – 9 years old

Finished a particularly dangerous corner off the touchline in the first half, with the ball circling the six-yard area. Characteristically stepping out of the backline, turning defense into attack. Her positional play is always smart – that’s the mark of a good captain. She’s also been spotted talking to young players throughout, which again comes with her leadership role. She took responsibility and her teammates responded. In tears as the final whistle blew, Williamson crowned her first tournament as captain by lifting the Euro 2022 trophy. Her investment in this team is clear. for all to see and will only help the future situation of England.

Rachel Daly – 7

Light all games. There was a task given to governor Magull and replace Nicole Anyomi in the second period, but did it in a manly manner. There isn’t too much of a threat going forward – certainly not as obvious as the game against Sweden – but more needs to be defended. As she is not a natural left-back, Daly has made that position her own in this tournament and can be proud of her contributions.

Lucy bronze – 7

Got caught a few times early. This seems to be an opposing tactic aimed at the gap between Dong and Sang in the opening exchanges of the match. She recovered well and was a head of experience as England negotiated extra time with nothing. She has kept Germany’s prolific offensive talent silent for the most part – a feat no other side in the competition has been able to pull off.

Georgia Stanway – 7

The defense was a bit erratic but didn’t stop running. She worked tirelessly for the goal and had to stay disciplined after being penalized early in the first half. A lot of the pre-tournament talk was about Stanway’s role, whether she’ll be playing as No 10 or elsewhere. In fact, she worked with Walsh and it worked perfectly. A young partnership, but has worked and made endless efforts. She has an extremely mature head for a 23-year-old and will be another key take on this youthful exciting side in the coming year.

Keira Walsh – 10

Sent everything back again. Haven’t missed a minute of this tournament and you can see why. No one can play her role for the team, she is indispensable. Germany have won the midfield fight in every match they have played at Euro 2022. Not against England. Walsh won the day at Wembley. She pocketed Lena Oberdorf and teammates at every opportunity and then had the mentality to look ahead and pick a smart pass. Her assist for Ella Toone’s opening goal is considered very important. She then made a daring dribble past Oberdorf in the 98th minute, before sending England forward. A great all-round display.

Lauren Hemp – 8

Never reached the pinnacle of pre-tournament payouts but still offered England a lot. She is a useful ball when the Lionesses need a ready runner, especially in the second half. Hemp has plenty of time to mark its influence on the international scene in the coming years and will grow to become one of Sarina Wiegman’s most prized assets. On the creative side, she is not as effective as is often the case at Man City at club level, but still attracts opposition defenders in their numbers. Duc has doubled up on her, providing space for the others. She also made an intervention to save the game in the 114th minute, diving to redirect the ball behind when Svenja Huth tried to squeeze it between her and the post.

Beth Mead – 7

Not as impactful as her previous games, but will remember the tournament for the abundance of goals she has scored over the years. Having been dropped from the Lionesses team as recently as last year, she now ensures that she is a permanent fixture. She owns the right wing. Unfortunately, after throwing herself into a heavy tackle in the 64th minute, she was forced off the field early but left the pitch to a standing ovation from the audience inside Wembley. She finished the competition as top scorer, along with Popp. He scored 22 goals at Euro 2022, a team record in a single championship (men’s or women’s) – Mead scored six of them.

Fran Kirby – 7

The player is not selfish. This will never be a tournament where Kirby will be able to show his best, after a season battered by grueling problems. But even appearing at Euro 2022 has marked the ambition of the Chelsea star. In the match against Sweden, she was almost unplayable, and showed glimpses against Germany, albeit fleetingly. She’s another player that Wiegman can rely on to serve, even when she’s not at her peak.

Ellen White – 7

Had a chance to break the deadlock in the fourth minute after being well found by Kirby in the post. The smart move continuously stretched the German backline but the service didn’t always appear during the difficult first period. She made way for Alessia Russo earlier than usual, but played a huge part in a hugely successful summer for the England women’s team. Her service was commendable, though not as up to the mark as she would have liked. She has been leading from the front and can finally say – after making her international debut in 2010 – that she has won a major title with England.

Alessia Russo (for Ellen White, 56 years old) – 7

No one will ever forget Russo’s inspirational heel strike against Sweden. It was a standout moment of the tournament. By every chance, it will turn out to be one of the best goals scored in the women’s Euro knockout. She left her mark in this competition, even if her performance against Germany didn’t have much of an impact. This is just the beginning for the Man United striker, who has stamped her authority on this new wave of Lionesses talent and proven she is ready to take the shirt from White – whenever which is possible.

Ella Toone (for Fran Kirby, 56 years old) – 9

Scored the game-changing goal, catching up with a sharp Walsh pass before cooingly lifted the ball past Merle Frohms. The touch is made like a striker, intuitive yet instinctive. Her energy is contagious and rubs against teammates, which is why she is always introduced around the hour – when England need a speed boost. She deserves all the credit for two incredibly quality and important goals, at this tournament.

Chloe Kelly (for Beth Mead, 64 years old) – 8

England’s savior in extra time. The reason the Lionesses won their first major league trophy. A poacher’s shot from a German save, but it’s all scored. And nothing will count as much as that one. It represents the most influential mark of her career to date and there is much more to come from the 24-year-old. Her hold on the ball was also excellent and put England in the lead without too much of a threat at the opposite end. When England needed a hero, she was it, limiting her fairy-tale return after missing much of the 2021/22 season with an ACL injury.
