England heroes Lucy Bronze, Beth Mead and Millie Bright on the Ballon d’Or shortlist | Football news
UK Euro 2022 winners Lucy Bronze, Beth Mead and Millie Bright are among the nominees for the Feminine Ballon d’Or.
Mead was the top scorer and player was named the player of the tournament when England won at home last month.
Chelsea’s Sam Kerr and Arsenal’s Vivianne Miedema were also shortlisted, along with Barcelona star Alexia Putellas, while the headlines for the men’s nominations were the absence of Lionel Messi.
Messi won the award in 2021 and 2019 – it was not held in 2020 because of the Covid-19 pandemic – but, after moving to Paris Saint-Germain, the Argentine was omitted.
Messi’s longtime rival for the Ballon d’Or, Cristiano Ronaldo, is included while British trio Trent Alexander-Arnold, Phil Foden and Harry Kane also feature on the strong 30 list.
Foden is one of six Manchester City players on a list that includes rookie Erling Haaland while Liverpool’s quartet of Mohamed Salah, Luiz Diaz, Fabinho, Virgil van Dijk and Darwin Nunez – as well as newly departed Sadio Mane – also included.
Heung-Min Son teamed up with his attacking partner Kane, while the favorite to win for the first time was Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema.
The winners will be crowned at the Ballon d’Or awards ceremony on October 17 in Paris.
