England head coach Matthew Mott praised Liam Dawson’s fight in the defeat to Pakistan, while captain Moeen Ali admitted they should have been chasing the home team’s score.
Pakistan held on to a three-goal win to equalize a seven-match streak at 2-2, but only after control of the match swung like a pendulum.
He was the favorite as they began chasing a light target of 167, but struggled with a 14-3 scoreline after just two passes.
Dawson seemed to have worked things out in their favor as he hit 24 goals on 18 to leave just nine of 12 balls, but Pakistan had the last three to go above.
The ending saw No 11 Reece Topley and Adil Rashid attempt a crazy single with four balls left in the match, inviting as inevitable as the timing was too long.
Mott was full of praise for Dawson, who had previously had a top score of 10 in this format and finished with 34 with a 200 strike rate, for fighting everything when the heat was on.
“The use of wickets in powerplay put us on the back foot, it took a really good partnership to get us back on it,” he said.
“Liam’s hit was exceptional. Everyone was surprised, in our wildest dreams we didn’t even think we’d get there. It just shows in T20 cricket, you never do.
“Haris Rauf was under pressure (in the 19th half) and he bowed to win.”
After four sold-out games in Karachi, with a total attendance of around 140,000, the series now heads to Lahore, where the teams will resume their battle on Wednesday, live on Sports sky.
Moeen Ali: A great game of cricket; We should chase it down
Skipper Moeen admitted his England team succumbed to late pressure after Pakistan weathered a tense finale.
Moeen said: “Great game of cricket. It goes both ways. It just wobbles.
“We felt like we should have chased that, I’m disappointed we didn’t. We kept losing points but still in it.
“Brook played well again and Daws, the way he played tonight was brilliant. I’m sad that he couldn’t push our limits. But these things happen.
“We felt we should have won the game. The pressure was there, and they were bowling really well.”
England’s Olly Stone told Sky Sports after the game…
“Obviously we didn’t get the result we deserved but the atmosphere was great and all the matches were played.
“I love being out there. It makes all the hard work worthwhile.
“Obviously it didn’t go according to plan [bowled first ball to Rauf with the game on the line]
“I feel it’s going well [with the ball]. All the hard work I put in made it worthwhile. When I came out, the boys said I hit [90mph]. That’s great.
“I try to go out there and try to be aggressive. I love playing for England and hopefully for many more years.”
