As expected, Shogun, The Bear, And Baby reindeer will be performed Emmys 2024 nominations in the drama, comedy, and miniseries categories—but beyond that, voters threw us a few curve balls. Several Oscar winners who were once considered safe for nominations didn’t make the cut. A few viral hits weren’t enough to knock off the late-night old guard. Somehow, voters remembered a long-canceled HBO drama while ignoring two of its most heavily campaigned entries. And wait for it: Despite those reviews, Royal Palm take How multiple nominations? Below, we’re breaking down the biggest shockers from Emmy nominations morning—from the ones we were most surprised to see to the ones we were most surprised not to see.
SKIP: Emma Stone, The Curse
Look, no one expected it. The Curse is the television award of the Academy. The Emmys tend to be more formal than the Oscars and Nathan Fielder‘s offbeat, satirical film has been divisive with viewers from the start. But still: Do we really think they’d completely ignore a critically acclaimed vehicle for the two-time Oscar winner? Emma Stone? The film showcased one of the actress’s most skillful and accomplished performances to date. It was painful to see her scorned in favor of Jennifer Aniston And Reese Witherspoon from Morning program—both have been nominated for these roles before, and seen their shows receive a lot of love elsewhere. SURPRISE: Selena Gomez gets her first acting nomination
It took three seasons, but Gomez earned her first acting nomination for her role in the charming drama. There was only murder in the building. Both of her co-stars have previously been nominated, and it’s becoming increasingly clear that the third member of this murder-solving trio hasn’t had her moment yet. The film did really well this year, with nominations for Martin Short And Steve Martin, with guest stars Meryl Streep, Matthew Broderick, and recent Oscar winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph. —Rebecca Ford
SNUB: Cosmo Jarvis is eliminated General a stroke of luck
General is the highest-grossing series this year, with a staggering 25 nominations, but there’s one glaring snub: Jarvis Universe. The British actor, who plays the bumbling but kind-hearted John Blackthorne on the hit FX series, was snubbed for lead actor in a drama, despite his co-star Hiroyuki Sanada has earned a nomination. As the outsider Blackthorne, Jarvis is our entry into the world General—and sometimes provides much-needed comic relief. He delivers a multilayered performance filled with nervousness, panache, and surprise. —Radio frequency
SURPRISE: Idris Elba Hijack a nominated actor
Apply TV+ Drama Rob It’s not exactly on most people’s radar for an Emmy nomination, but the Television Academy made sure to give its star, Idris Elba, some love with a nomination for lead actor in a drama series. In the thriller, which has already been renewed for a second season, Elba plays a business negotiator who has to put his skills to use when a plane is hijacked on a flight from Dubai to London. —Radio frequency

Bear cleaned up and set a new record for nominations for a comedy series (23 total!), but unfortunately there wasn’t room for every member of the cast to be nominated for acting. While Liza Colon-Zayas And Lionel Boyce Both received their first nominations, Abby Elliott, who plays Carmy’s sister Natalie “Sugar” Berzatto, missed out on the supporting actress category. Hopefully SNL Music Night amazing work of alumni in ice chips episode season three (in which her character goes into labor) would eventually help her earn that nomination the following year. —Radio frequency
SURPRISE: Girl5Eva appear
While it remains a baffling tragedy that this funny, engaging show continues to be shut out of the drama and acting categories, Girl5Eva received a little love from the Television Academy with a writing nomination for the episode “Orlando,” written by Meredith Scardino And Sam means. It will compete with heavyweights like The Bear, Hacks, And Abbott Elementary School, But we’re glad to see the show getting the recognition it deserves. (It’s also nominated for best original music and lyrics for the song “The Medium Time.”) —RF
SURPRISE: Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig compete against each other…in two Category
Maya Rudolph was nominated for four Emmys this year—a huge accomplishment in itself. One of those was for her Apple TV+ comedy Booty. This is her first nomination for a leading role; she is nominated in that category alongside her close friend and frequent co-star. Kristen Wiig, who will also star in a new Apple TV+ show in Royal Palm. Rudolph gets another nod for the home run spot. Saturday Night Live—and, yes, so does Wiig. That’s right: Bridesmaids The best friends are competing head-to-head in not one but two races this year. As for Rudolph’s remaining nominations, for voice acting in Big mouth and music & lyrics on SNL Music Night? Wiig still has a long way to go. —DC
SNUB: Candidates for new TV series
The Emmys’ famous penchant for familiar favorites tends to be most evident in the variety talk show category—they simply can’t let go of the old-school late-night host lineup. If there was ever a year when that would change, it’s this one: Due to a smaller pool of submissions, the number of nominations has been reduced to four, and two intriguing new contenders have joined the race. This ambitious science fiction series from the creators of Game of Thrones is a hit on Netflix—and, apparently, on the TV Academy, too. Despite mixed reviews, the film features a cast that includes Jovan Adepo And Eiza GonzalezIt earned six nominations, including a surprise nomination in the drama series category. It was also rewarded for its technical achievements, with nominations for cinematography, editing and main presentation. —RF

When you hear that Kate Winslet is starring in a new HBO limited series from an Emmy-winning creator, you’d be forgiven for thinking an Emmy nomination was a given. But Regime failed with both critics and audiences, even though Winslet’s comedic performance was widely praised, making the film a tough sell to Emmy voters in a particularly crowded field. She wasn’t even the only Oscar winner left off the list: while Jodie Foster And Brie Larson achieved as expected, the Academy also ignored Foreigner‘ Nicole Kidman (more on that later) and Lillian Hall‘S Jessica Lange. —DC

Remember HBO’s expensive, well-received Lakers drama that was abruptly canceled almost a year ago? Well, Emmy voters apparently did. The show received an impressive five nominations, including in a competitive directing race—more than it was nominated for best drama series. Fall out And The Gilded Age-and for Tracy Letts‘s scene-stealing guest turn as coach Jack McKinney. While other HBO efforts were more heavily campaigned like empath And Regime Only one nomination per person may be received, Winning time maintain deep support hidden clearly. —DC
DIE: Foreigner leave empty handed
Amazon series Foreigner, Based on a popular novel, it has all the makings of an Emmy-nominated show. This limited series stars a big name (Nicole Kidman), has an author director (Bye‘S Lulu Wang), and visually and technically impressive. Even if the acting races are too crowded to include Kidman or the supporting cast (including a strong performance by Sarayu Blue, Ji-young Yoo, And Ruby Ruiz), it’s surprising that the film didn’t receive any nominations elsewhere. —Radio frequency

Well, Leigh signed on for that controversial post-Oscar open letter months ago, probably didn’t help. But it was also a show full of big choices that might not suit every voter’s taste. SURPRISE: Lamorne Morris, Fargo
While Jennifer Jason Leigh didn’t make the list, another supporting actor Fargo The player who was supposed to have the longer shot did it. Lamorne Morris has been doing very well on TV for a long time, mostly in comedic roles (New Girl, Woke up). But he absorbed this. Fargo season with lots of heart as state police help Temple of Juno‘s mother is on the run. This stylish new Apple drama was nominated for an Emmy this morning as a bubble show. But it earned a strong 11 nominations, including for comedy. Star Kristen Wiig, who plays an ambitious social climber in the glossy period comedy set in high society in Palm Beach, Florida, earned nominations for her leading role and Carol Burnett also won a nomination for Best Supporting Actress. —Radio frequency
