US Open champion Emma Raducanu can finally face her idol and former world No. 1 Simona Halep after the Miami Open draw.

With 27 of the world’s top 30 players competing at the WTA 1000 event, the British No. 1 will have to go through the stacked end of the first half featuring Halep and sixth seed Karolina Pliskova.

Raducanu, whose father, Ian, is from Romania, has previously admitted to growing up idolizing Halep.

There have been two separate occasions when Raducanu and Halep were scheduled to meet – at the Transylvania Open and the Australian Open – but the 19-year-old missed her chance both times after being eliminated.

Raducanu bids farewell in the opening round in Miami but will face Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic or a qualified tennis player in the second round.

If she gets past that, there’s every chance she could play the final Halep.

The Romanian also said goodbye to the first round and will play the winners against Daria Saville and Greet Minnen.

The two-time Grand Slam champion is in fine form, reaching the semi-finals at Indian Wells last week.

Sixth seed Karolina Pliskova could meet Raducanu or Halep in round four, if she gets that far.

Anett Kontaveit topped the second half of the draw, while former world No 1 Naomi Osaka and Angelique Kerber sat in the same half, as did 18th seed Leylah Fernandez, last year’s US Open runner-up.

Maria Sakkari and Paula Badosa came out on top in the third quarter, with second seed Iga Swiatek, who has won the past 11 by winning titles in the first two WTA 1000 events, in Doha and Indian Wells, in the fourth quarter. .

The Pole could face local hope Coco Gauff in the fourth round.
