Emma Raducanu: Number 1 Brit accepting wild cards into WTA event in Portoroz, Slovenia next week | Tennis News

Emma Raducanu will return to competition next week after taking part in the WTA event in Portoroz, Slovenia.

The British No 1 was originally scheduled to compete in South Korea next month but ending her US Open title defense early has allowed her to add an additional tournament to her calendar.

Raducanu suffered a disappointing first-round loss to Frenchman Alize Cornet in New York, which would see her ranking drop from 11 to around 83.

The Slovenia event is the WTA’s lowest tier but has a relatively strong profile, with Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina and last year’s French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova also signed up.

Speaking after the defeat to Cornet, Raducanu said: “The most interesting thing is to try to play well in each different tournament.

“Whatever it is, it sounds weird, but, the US Open champion, obviously it would be great to defend the title, but I wanted to have new experiences. The way I did it, I wanted to. There is another tournament.

“It doesn’t really matter. I think any player would be happy to win a tournament. I think it makes a big difference no matter the level.”

Raducanu is expected to continue working with coach Tursunov

The girl is expected to continue working with coach Dmitry Tursunov when she returns to competition next week.

Raducanu has been looking for a permanent coach since splitting from Torben Beltz in the spring and has tried out Russia’s Tursunov over the summer.

She declined to say whether she would stick with Tursunov, 39, who peaked at the top 20 in the world in 2006, after her exit from the US Open.

“We had a good six weeks in the United States here after being beaten by Cornet,” said Raducanu. “But I haven’t really thought about it yet.”

Tursunov previously had success as a coach with Anett Kontaveit and Aryna Sabalenka in the US Open semifinals, with whom he guided into the top 10 in a two-year direct partnership.

After Portoroz, Raducanu will head to Asia for the Korean Open that starts on September 19.
