Where do Eminem and his mother stand amid her death?
Her first battle with illness became public news in September. At the time, InTouch Weekly reported that Debbie was suffering from terminal cancer and did not have long to live. An internal source of this newspaper confirmed that Eminem’s mother is busy between staying at the cancer center and staying with family members. “She has very little time,” The source said. In addition, the source confirmed that Eminem still takes financial care of his mother and other family members despite the rift in their relationship.
“People around her aren’t even sure if Eminem knows what’s going on with his mother,” the insider told InTouch Weekly. “He is very good to his mother. He assures her he’ll take care of her, but they don’t really talk. It will be good for both [to communicate]. This may give them a chance to reconcile.”
Eminem’s complicated relationship with his mother is no secret. In 1999, his song “My Name Is” criticized his mother and her neglect in raising him. Debbie Nelson sued her son for defamation that same year. She demanded $11 million in compensation. According to ABC Newsshe won the case in 2001. In the end, she reportedly walked away with about $1,600 of the $25,000 award after attorney fees.
That doesn’t stop However, the rapper narrates his POV. In 2002, he released “Cleanin’ Out My Closet”, which contained lyrics critical of his mother and their rocky relationship. He comes in especially in the third verse.
“But guess what, now you’re older and it’s cold when you’re alone. And Nathan is growing up so fast, he’ll know you’re a fake. And Hailie is all grown up now, you should look at her, she’s so beautiful. But you’ll never meet her, she won’t even be at your funeral (Ha-ha!). See, what hurts me the most is that you refuse to admit you’re wrong. B***h, sing it, keep telling yourself that you are a mother! But how dare you try to take something you won’t help me get?! You selfish bastard, I hope you burn in hell for this shit! Do you remember when Ronnie died and you said you wished it was me? (Hehe) Well, guess what? I’m already dead, death is fine for you!”
In his 2013 track ‘Headlights’, Eminem spoke about their long-distance relationship and even apologized to his mother for ‘Cleanin’ Out My Closet.’ In 2022, she congratulated him on being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
While loss entered Eminem’s life in the last quarter of 2024 with the death of his mother, so did life! Earlier this year, his daughter Hailie Jade marry her Evan McClintock in May. In October, Slim Shady got his official pop-hat as Hailie announced pregnancy. This moment was captured in a sweet video between father and daughter.
