Elon Musk says Tesla will start using humanoid robots next year

Tesla boss Elon Musk said the electric car maker will start producing and using humanoid robots next year.

In a social media post, Mr. Musk said these robots will be used first by Tesla and will begin production for sale in 2026.

The tech billionaire has previously said he hopes the robot, named Optimus, will be ready for use at Tesla factories by the end of this year.

Other companies, including Honda and Boston Dynamics, have also been developing their own humanoid robots.

“Tesla will produce small quantities of truly useful humanoid robots for internal use at Tesla next year and hope to produce large quantities for other companies by 2026,” Musk said on his social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

The news comes just a day before Tesla releases its latest financial results.

Shares of the company ended Monday’s trading session on Wall Street up more than 5%.

He has previously said Tesla aims to mass produce the robots for less than $20,000 (£17,900) each.

Mr. Musk is famous for setting ambitious timelines for his companies, but he doesn’t always meet them.

In 2019, he said he was “very confident” that Tesla would put self-driving taxis on the road next year.

Earlier this year, Mr Musk said the long-awaited robot taxi would be unveiled on August 8.

Last week, he appeared to confirm reports that the event would be postponed.

Mr Musk did not give a new date but said he had requested changes to the front end of the car.

“The extra time allows us to show a few other things,” he wrote.

The news comes after Bloomberg News reported the event had been postponed until October.

Mr Musk’s businesses are increasingly focused on technologies such as artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles and robotics at a time when demand for electric vehicles is slowing.
