Elon Musk proposes China-Taiwan ‘solution’, days after his Russia-Ukraine ‘peace plan poll’ | World News

Elon Musk has suggested making Taiwan a “special administrative region” similar to Hong Kong, just days after presenting a “peace plan” he said could end Russia’s invasion in Ukraine.

Musk – the world’s richest man – said tensions between China and Taiwan could be resolved by transferring some control Taiwan to Beijing.

“My suggestion… would be to find a special administrative district for Taiwan that is reasonable and palatable, which may not satisfy everyone,” he told the Financial Times.

The 51-year-old answered a question about China, where his electric car company Tesla runs one of its super factories in Shanghai.

An island of 23 million people, 112 miles off the coast of China, Taiwan claims to be a democratic, independent country with its own leader, constitution, political system, and military.

However, Beijing considers Taiwan a breakaway Chinese province and will eventually return under its control – by force if necessary.

Musk, who has long been softer stance towards the Chinese government than to the authorities in the United States, continued in his interview: “And it can, and I think maybe, in fact, that [Taiwan] there could be a more lenient deal than Hong Kong. “

China has proposed to Taiwan a “one country, two systems” model of autonomy similar to what Hong Kong has, but that has been rejected by all mainstream political parties in Taiwan. and not supported by the public.

In 2020, Beijing imposed a tough National Security Law in Hong Kong.

Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry declined to comment on Musk’s comments.

Wang Ting-yu, a senior lawmaker from Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party who sits on the parliament’s foreign and defense committees, criticized Musk on his Facebook page.

He wrote, “Individual independent companies cannot take their ownership as a joke. So why should they blatantly deprive the 23 million Taiwanese of their democratic freedoms, sovereignty and way of life. That is unacceptable for Ukraine, and Taiwan certainly won’t allow it.”

“Musk needs to find a clear-minded political adviser,” a senior Taiwanese official familiar with security planning in the region told Reuters under an agreement to remain anonymous.

“The world has clearly seen what happened to Hong Kong … its economic and social vibrancy abruptly ended under Beijing’s totalitarian domination.”

Asked about Musk’s comments, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said Taiwan was a “domestic matter”, adding that Beijing would continue to adhere to the principle of peaceful reunification while “resolutely smash” Taiwan’s separatism.

Musk has two super factories in the US – in Nevada and New York – and two overseas in Shanghai, China and Berlin, Germany.

The Shanghai factory accounted for about half of Tesla’s global deliveries last year.

Musk said he thinks conflict over Taiwan is inevitable and warns of its potential impact on not only Tesla, but also iPhone maker Apple Inc and the broader economy.

About 30 companies in Apple’s supply chain have factories in Shanghai.

Musk also said China sought assurances that he would not provide his rocket company SpaceX’s Starlink internet service there.

Earlier this week, Musk sparked outrage after posting a Twitter poll inviting his 107.7 million followers to vote on a proposed “Ukraine-Russia Peace plan”, which includes Permanent cession of Crimea to Russia.

He said new referendums could be held under UN supervision to determine the fate of territory controlled by Russia and Ukraine agreed to remain neutral.

This drew harsh criticism from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who suggested his own Twitter poll: “Which @elonmusk do you prefer? A Ukraine supporter (or) supporter? Russia.”

Twitter is now suing Musk after he extended a $44 billion (£39.6 billion) deal to buy the social media platform. The trial will begin on October 17.
