Elon Musk challenges UAW to hold a union vote at Tesla’s factory in California

Elon Musk said Tesla will do nothing to prevent United Auto workers (UAW) from holding a union vote at the company’s Fremont, California plant. In one tweetThe company director said Tesla’s real challenge in the Bay Area is negative unemployment, so it treats and compensates “(great)” people who would otherwise leave.

Musk posted the tweet in response to Gene Simmons, the co-lead singer of Kiss, who sided with the chief executive when he urged the President not to mention Tesla during his State of the Union Address. The president only commended Ford and General Motors for investing billions of dollars in the effort to release electric vehicles, thereby creating thousands of jobs in the process. Equal Bloomberg notes, Biden is a supporter of labor unions and frequently slams Tesla, which has a non-union workforce, in his speeches and interviews.

In one follow tweets, Musk claims that Tesla factory workers have the highest compensation in the auto industry, posting an interview with GM CEO Mary Barra as his source. In the interview, news anchor and journalist Andrew Sorkin said Tesla’s non-union workers are earning more than their union counterparts. Barra says she’ll have to look at more information, as one also has to factor in benefits and not just pay, but what Sorkin said wasn’t the case last time she checked.

The UAW has worked to unify Tesla for years, and Musk has been critical of those efforts from the start. When a production worker in Fremont claimed poor working conditions and low wages in 2017, Musk reported sent a letter for employees who request a point-by-point takedown and UAW reduction. The union’s true loyalty, he said, is to the “huge car companies, where the money they take from employees in remuneration is far greater than what they can earn from Tesla.”

In the same year, the National Labor Relations Board Complaint filed against the automaker after investigating claims of unfair labor practices. According to the NLRB, workers said Tesla “coerced and threatened” them with a confidentiality agreement that prevented them from discussing the union. In 2018, the NLRB found that the company had violated labor law by firing union activist Richard Ortiz and demanding that they compensate him for loss of income and benefits.

Labor Department also command Musk deletes a tweet that could sound like a threat to employees. In the same tweet, Musk similarly called for consolidation efforts. “There is nothing to prevent the Tesla team at our car factory from participating in a union vote. It is possible to do so. [tomorrow] if they want to,” he wrote. However, he also said: “But why pay union dues and give up stock options for nothing? “NLRB President Wilma Liebman explained at the time to an employee, it doesn’t sound like they will. There will be stock options left if they vote to merge. Tesla offers a stock compensation program. for most of its employees, like Electrek notes, and the company’s rising share price makes it a very valuable gain.
