Elon Musk advises users to say goodbye to hashtags on X: Here’s why they no longer serve a purpose
Elon Musk, since buying Twitter two years ago and changing its name to X, has steered the platform in new directions. Over time, X has seen a number of changes, from the introduction of video and audio calls to the addition of the Grok AI chatbot and job listing features. Musk recently made it clear that hashtags, which have long been a staple of social media posts, no longer have a place on X.
The Role of Hashtags on X
Musk’s statement, shared in response to a question about hashtags, which was confirmed by Grok, the AI chatbot, who also objected to their use. According to Musk, hashtags are no longer necessary for the system to function effectively and, in his opinion, they are not visually appealing.

For years, hashtags have helped users discover trending topics and connect with related posts. They serve as a tool to effectively search and categorize content. However, Musk’s comments suggest that X has developed a new method to track and organize posts without hashtags. This represents an evolution in X’s underlying algorithm, potentially reducing reliance on outdated tagging methods.

Grok’s response also emphasized that using the hashtag could be seen as a “cry of despair” and a futile attempt to gain visibility. This chatbot goes further, calling hashtags “a ticket to nowhere,” emphasizing Musk’s vision of a platform that goes beyond traditional methods of content organization.
