Britain’s Queen Elizabeth said on Saturday that she wants Prince Charles’ wife Camilla to take on the title of Queen consort when he becomes king.

In a letter written to mark the 70th anniversary of her accession to the throne, Elizabeth said the occasion has given her pause to reflect on the loyalty and affection the British public has shown her.

“And when, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes king, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support you have given me; and I sincerely wish that, when the time comes that comes, Camilla will Elizabeth said.

Charles and Camilla, longtime lovers, were married in 2005 in a civil ceremony in Windsor.

Elizabeth’s move reflects a broader acceptance of Camilla’s royal status.

The tabloids no longer target her as they did in the decade following the death of Charles’ first wife, Princess Diana.

Camilla – whose current title is Duchess of Cornwall – now regularly represents the royal family alongside Charles on official duties.

Throughout British history, the wife of a king was often given the title of Constitutional Queen, with no constitutional authority. At the time of the marriage, it was officially decided that Camilla would use the title Princess Consort if Charles became king.
