‘Elite Dangerous’ developer cancels development of all future console updates

Frontier Developments has Canceled further development of Dangerous elite on Xbox and PlayStation and will no longer release a console version of it Odyssey expansion. Frontier director David Braben said: “We have struggled with the best way to move forward and with a heavy heart we have decided to cancel all development of the console.

$40 Odyssey The final expansion gave players the opportunity to explore planets on foot and visit space stations, settlements and more – instead of just roaming around in spaceships and landing vehicles. . However, the PC launch was a disaster with performance, server and other issues, and the company has struggled to fix them ever since. The expansion has received 10 major updates so far, but it still seems to have a lot of work to do, according to Braben.

“It’s no secret that Odyssey’s launch is less than ideal, including the need to split up the PC/console player base to focus on PC-only launches,” Braben writes. “Since releasing Odyssey in May 2021, we’ve worked tirelessly to improve the Odyssey experience on PC, and while we’ve made a lot of progress, there’s still work to be done.”

It is expected that the company will focus on releasing Odyssey on the console after it licks the PC error. Now, however, Frontier is canceling not only the Odyssey but also any future Elite Dangerous updates on Xbox or PlayStation. Instead, it will focus on PC development, which has the largest player base to date.

“We needed to be able to continue with the story of the game, and to do this we needed to focus on a single codebase,” Braben said. “Dangerous elite will continue on console as it is now with important updates, but we will focus on new content updates on PC later-Odyssey code base. This was not an easy decision to make, but it was made with a view towards the long-term future of Elite Dangerous. “Frontier will share more information about future PC development,” he added.
