Electrical performance crossovers touch the ‘Ring’

Prototypes for Porsche’s electric Macan have been spotted once again, revealing several new design elements related to the production model.

Porsche has been hinting at an electric Macan for a number of years and in early 2021 finally confirmed the car. It’s due out in 2023, which means we’ll likely see it show up as a 2024 model here in the US.

It’s a year later than previously thought and means the electric Macan will arrive a year later related to Audi known as Q6 E-Tron, is expected to arrive later this year. The cars will run on the new modular PPE (Premium Platform Electric) platform developed by Porsche in partnership with Audi. Versions of the platform will underpin many models across the Volkswagen Group.

Prototypes for the electric Macan hint at a design similar to a clay model shown a few years back. Book “Porsche Unseen”, with the key element being the same rectangular headlights as on the Taycan. We could also see a split headlight design, as the low additional lights at the front appear in the latest prototypes.

According to our photographer, a small rear spoiler also extends from the rear door at more than 30 mph. And don’t be fooled by the exhaust tips. Those are dummy units to hide the identity of the vehicle. Prototypes for the Porsche Taycan also have them.

Porsche is relying on both real- and virtual-world testing to accelerate the development of the electric Macan, particularly in the areas of aerodynamics, power management, user interface and audio. The development goal was to ensure that the electric Macan was the sportiest car in its class. The key to this will be a sophisticated all-wheel drive system.

One major advantage the electric Macan will have over most of the competition is the 800-volt electrical architecture, which means fast charging times will be doable. Using a 350 kw charging point, Porsche has suggested that 60 miles can be added in four minutes and nearly 250 miles in less than 20 minutes. The automaker has also demonstrated 450 kW charging, which can add 60 miles in just three minutes. We know of no 450 kw charging stations in the US

Production of the electric Macan will take place at Porsche’s plant in Leipzig, Germany, where the current gas-powered model is built. Attention, Porsche updated gasoline-powered Macan for the 2022 model year. This is actually the crossover’s second update. The plan is to continue selling the gas-powered Macan along with the electric newcomer in a few years when charging infrastructure is built. Ultimately, however, only the electric version will be sold.

We’ll all need to get acquainted with more models from the all-electric Porsche lineup. Last year, the automaker said it estimates more than 80% of its sales will be electric by 2030, with the rest being 911s, which will be Porsche’s final product for the internal combustion engine.
