Electric vehicle sales in India hit new high? Over 2.78 thousand units sold in the first 3 months
India could consider 2023 a record year for electric vehicle sales if trends from the first three months of the year hold true. Since January this year, Indians have purchased 2.78 lakh electric vehicles, averaging more than 90,000 electric vehicles per month. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said this in a written reply to Lok Sabha on Thursday. At this rate, India is likely to improve on its previous best of one million electric vehicles sold last year by the end of 2023.
Gadkari derives electric vehicle sales data from the ministry’s Vahan portal registration records. According to Vahan, electric vehicle registrations in India have increased to 10,200,000 in 2022 from only 3,290,000 in 2021, almost tripling. The minister said that states that are not part of the Vahan portal for registration will likely be included in the coming days. This will help collate more data on EV registrations. He said Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh are in the process of migrating to Vahan. He did not specify whether states like Telangana and Lakshadweep will be included in the portal any time soon.
Krishan Pal Gurjar, Minister of Heavy Industry, recently said that until March 15 of this year, Indians had purchased 21.7 lakh electric vehicles. He revealed that Uttar Pradesh topped the list with the most number of electric vehicles. India’s largest state registered 4,65 lakh EVs within the first three months. Following UP are states like Maharashtra with 2.26 lakh EVs registered while Delhi registers around 2.03 lakh EVs.
