An electric successor to the Audi R8 supercar based on Porsche’s platform is being prepared for launch in the middle of this decade, Autocar reported on Monday.

Quoting from Audi insiders, the British publication says the new car will not be a direct successor to the R8 and will therefore get a new name. As for the R8, it is said to launch next year, with the branding marked by a special model.

Autocar Audi says it will likely use one of two platforms developed by Porsche for the successor to the R8. One option is the electric sports car platform being developed for Porsche 718 electricalso due to mid-decade.

An alternative could be a sport-focused version of the Volkswagen Group upcoming SSP platform. While the SSP platform will be used by many models in the VW Group’s brand portfolio, Porsche has been tasked with developing a specific version for high-performance applications.

News of an electric successor to the R8 is hardly a surprise. In an interview with release Last year, Linda Kurz, head of product marketing for Audi Sport, the division responsible for the R8 and RS-branded cars, said future R-branded cars will run by electricity.

Audi is committed to launching only tram from 2026and that commitment extends to the Audi Sport division.

Audi has also made some strong hints that the R8, or any future halo product like the R8, will go electric. Audi first hinted at an electric R8 in early 2009, when it launched one Concept car R8 E-Tron based on the original R8 platform.

There have been several R8 E-Tron follow-up concepts already, and Audi even claims to have sold some R8 E-Trons is based on the current generation R8 platform. The car was briefly offered for sale in 2015 with a seven-figure price tag but with performance that outshines a Tesla. Not surprisingly, it was quickly withdraw from the market.

Perhaps the best representation of what an electric R8 successor could be like Audi’s PB18 E-Tron concept model launched in 2018. The concept features solid-state batteries, which are lighter than current liquid-type batteries and charge faster. It’s a technology VW Group is prepare for the second half of the decade.
