Elden Ring is February’s best-selling game, second-best launch month sales of any game over the past 12 months in the US
Another month, another batch of US NPD Number and unsurprisingly Elden Ring was the best-selling game in February.
Elden Ring is also the best-selling game from 2022 to date and more than that it is guaranteed to have the second best launch month sales of any title in the last 12 months, just behind Call of Duty last November: Vanguard. Best of all, after just one month on the US video game market, Elden Ring has ranked as the fifth best-selling game of the past year. It came in first on both Xbox and PC consoles, second in PlayStation hardware.
US NPD PREMIUM GAMES – Elden Ring launched as both best selling games in February 2022 as well as 2022 YTD. Elden Ring’s launch month sales were the second-highest of any tracked title released in the past 12 months, behind only Call of Duty: Vanguard, released in November 2021.

It came in second behind Sony’s exclusive Horizon Forbidden West on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, being the second best-selling game overall in the US as of February 2022. NPD Group’s Mat Piscatella reports that Horizon Forbidden West also set a new launch month record for PlayStation 5 in terms of dollar sales.
In terms of hardware, the Switch was the best-selling platform in February in terms of both sales volume and dollar sales. The Xbox Series X/S came in second in terms of both console sales and dollar sales, putting the PS5 firmly in third place last month.
However, the PS5 leads the video game hardware in terms of 2022 dollar sales as of now, Piscatella wrote on Twitter. During that same period, the Switch holds the highest unit sales. Overall, video game hardware dollar sales were down 27% from last February, totaling $295 million. Dollar revenue to date is also 5% lower than a year ago, falling to $685 million. As expected, the cause may be due to lack of supply to meet hardware demand, as Piscatella points out.
Last month, consumer spending on video game hardware, software and accessories fell 6% from February 2021, to $4.4 billion. Hardware, software and accessories all saw declines, with hardware taking the biggest hit. Year-to-date spending for 2022 also fell 4% from the same period in 2021, falling to $9.1 billion. In fact, Piscatella wrote on Twitter that “total market spending when compared to a year ago is now down for four straight months.”
