EJ Obiena wins pole vault gold in France
MANILA, Philippines–Filipino pole vaulter Ernest John Obiena earned his first win of the indoor track season by winning the Perche En Or in Roubaix, France on Sunday.
Obiena, ranked 3rd in the world, jumped the 5.82m hurdles to claim the title with China Yao Jie in second (5.75m) and Ethan Cormont in third with 5.65m at the meeting that formed part of the World Indoor Athletics Challenge Challenger subgroup.
Obiena opened her indoor season with a silver medal during the Springer international meeting in Cottbus, Germany last week.
The Tokyo Olympic athlete overcame 5.77 meters, coming in second after 5.82m by Sam Kendricks of the United States in the bronze level meeting of the World Athletics Championships.
Among the indoor meetings that 27-year-old Obiena can participate in are the Orlen Copernicus Cup in Torun, Poland on February 8, and the Hauts-de-France Pas-de-Calais Meeting in Lievin, France on May 15. 2.
All of these tournaments have been scheduled under the 2023 World Indoor Athletics Gold Championship, including the Madrid World Indoor Tournament on February 22.
