Via Sean Jones: Eddie Hearn is sounding the alarm ahead of a battle between Canelo Alvarez’s newly announced trilogy against Gennadiy Golovkin on September 17.
Matchroom Boxing promoter Hearn is good at rebuilding the boxer, but he won’t be able to do much for Canelo if he can’t take down 40-year-old Golovkin. He’s not the Al Davis of boxing.
Hearn worries that if Canelo is beaten by Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs), it will be his second straight loss. He will have no useful reason to explain the defeat as last time the 175-lb WBA champion Dmitry Bivol clearly defeated him.
If Canelo cannot compete at this level, Hearn cannot do much for the 31-year-old Mexican star.
A second straight loss for Canelo (57-2-2, 39 KOs) to GGG will result in Hearn needing to pull him back to the level of the boxers he’s held for three years. via.
Canelo losing to Golovkin on September 17 would ruin plans for a rematch with Bivol or a fight next year with David Benavidez or Jermall Charlo.
Tossing Canelo with Benavidez or Bivol to lose to Golovkin is like feeding appetizers to a school of hungry sharks in the Pacific.
Canelo can’t afford to lose to Golovkin or win another controversial decision that makes him look like the Nevada judges are defending him.
“This illusion of Canelo becoming an undefeated fighter does not exist; actually happening. Two losses almost put your career in the balance,” promoter Eddie Hearn told The DAZN Boxing Show.
Losing to Golovkin won’t ruin Canelo’s career, but it will signal his days as an elite boxer are over. It would be silly at that point if DAZN continued to require US boxing fans to buy Canelo matches on a pay-per-view basis.
They won’t want to buy Canelo fight on PPV as he’s failed in a row and has four questionable decisions in his past.
You can’t blame Hearn for wanting Canelo to fight in the sequel trilogy with Canelo, not Bivol. Getting stabbed a second time by Bivol would put Canelo’s career on the skateboard.
If Canelo loses to Bivol for the second time, you can’t sell a Canelo-Golovkin III battle on PPV as it will feel like an old time level battle between two bad guys.
“We know that Canelo is up to 175, which is a big claim, but he was expected to win that game,” Hearn continued.
“He must win this war; If he loses to GGG on September 17, where do you go from there?
“Consecutive defeat against two different fightersThis time with almost no excuses.
“The hardest thing for Canelo in this fight was recovering from that defeat; Hearn said.
