Ed Boon Says No Plans for Mortal Kombat or Unfair Announcement at Game Awards
Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon wants people to pause waiting for the impending announcement of a new entry in his fighting game franchise. Specifically, he said don’t expect a new game from NetherRealm Studios to appear at The Game Awards next week.
Boon may want to beat all expectations for Mortal Kombat 12 since his studio announced the 11th installment at The Game Awards 2018. This time history won’t repeat itself, NetherRealm’s creative director has made clear above. Twitter.
4 years ago at the Game Awards we tried to make a surprise announcement about the MK11, which was amazing.
Probably too cool, since many people assume we’ll repeat that trick for our next game.
Thank you for your anticipation, but we are not ready to announce the next NRS game yet.🙏 pic.twitter.com/QMXsuEPchR– Ed Boon (@noobde) December 2, 2022
This reinforces what Boon said in October. He explained that NetherRealm is focusing on the 30th anniversary of Mortal Kombat before any new game announcements. That will come in due time.
That said, a new mobile game called Mortal Kombat: Onslaught – developed by NetherRealm – has been revealed in October. It’s an RPG in which players “build a team of warriors from a vast roster of characters – and unleash them in large-scale real-time team battles,” according to Warner Bros. The game is scheduled for release next year.
The most recent entry in the series, Mortal Kombat 11, has sold over 12 million copies as of July 2021.
