Echo Generation is a cozy, laid-back holiday game

The year 2021 has been filled with lots of great games, with senior title and hidden gems in terms of abundance. However, there is one that could be perfectly suited for the laid-back fun of your vacation. It’s a turn-based RPG that has some adventure and puzzle elements with a hint of humor and a cozy aesthetic. That’s right, we’re talking Echo Generation, which is also available on Game Pass, so if you’re not sure you’re interested, it’s a great way to try and see.

In a nutshell, Echo Generation is a burrito of ’80s and ’90s love that’s cooked at home. So it’s basically Strange things Meet Earthbound, with a fun turn-based combat system like Paper Mario or South Park: The Stick of Truth. In combat, you not only control the two main characters of the story as they wield axes, ninja shurikens, and alien laser weapons, but you also get a great pet to carry with you. crew. There are several fun companions to find and unlock throughout the game, including a rapping raccoon and a curious cat. For all the skills that you make, you will first need to find a comic book to learn the sweet skill.

The “modern era” takes on traditional RPGs as always exciting, for which Earthbound gets a lot of credit for popularizing and pioneering. Here, we’ll roam around town, break into schools, uncover sinister secrets about the principal, and deal with aliens, monsters, mutants, and countless other things. Other oddities threaten to disrupt the good times. Without all these threats, we’d just hang out at the video store and a super fun treehouse. Echo Generation is filled with elements of long-gone nostalgia, but that’s okay if you don’t like that – the fighting mini-games are fun enough to run the game on its own, and the voxel art style is well executed. Places like spooky pet cemeteries and alien spaceships are just as fun to explore as they are stylish too. Boss fights are the best part, with lots of mechanics to deal with as you type in timing commands and actually move your character around to dodge deadly attacks.

While none of the systems go deep, what’s there works really well for the Echo Generation. This is not a big game that you will have to immerse yourself in for hundreds of hours, or maybe even ten hours. It’s an RPG that delivers its characters and mechanics fairly quickly, and it’s up to the player to handle some old-fashioned adventures along the way, evoking the concept of King’s problem-solving Quest as you transport items to different towns and find important objects to advance the story. Lots of optional quests and bonuses are also available for those who really want to explore!

I completely missed Echo Generation when it landed, but I’m glad I discovered it here as the year comes to an end. If you’re looking for a fast food-sized RPG that has the hearty backing of cozy vibes, look no further. Cookies!
