It’s rare that we get Nintendo Directs as big as a 40-minute presentation today, and even less so when we get any Earthbound news. Nintendo has announced that the SNES classic Earthbound is finally making its way to the Switch, and an NES prequel called Earthbound Beginnings will be joining.
Earthbound will be available as part of the Nintendo Switch Online SNES collection, added to the service at no additional cost. Likewise, Earthbound Beginnings will become a new addition to the Switch’s NES collection.
For those unfamiliar with Earthbound, it’s a 1994 JRPG about a small town boy named Ness who is tasked by a time-traveling bee to save the world from an invasion. of aliens. During his travels around the world, he meets a lot of strange characters and forms a team with three other very capable children. In Japan, it’s called Mother 2, even though it was the first installment of the series to be a hit.
Earthbound Beginnings is Mother’s original title that hasn’t been released outside of Japan in 16 years. JRPG 1989 was localized and released on the Wii U in 2015. Like Earthbound, you’ll play as a seemingly normal kid named Ninten with superpowers going on a strange adventure. This is the second time Earthbound Beginnings has been made available, skipping the release on the 3DS and NES Classic.
Hopefully, the release of these absolute classics will open the door for Mother 3 to see the light of day outside of Japan in some way. Start your prayer circles for the next Nintendo Direct.
