A “drunk” man has been arrested after allegedly urinating on an elderly woman in business class on a plane.

Indian police say the man, 34, has been detained in the southern city of Bengaluru following the incident on an Air India flight from New York arrive New Delhi.

The man, who faces charges of insulting a woman’s modesty, has been transferred to Indian capital on Saturday, where he was detained for 14 days while police investigate.

If convicted, the man, who was fired from his job at a prominent banking firm following the charges, will face up to three years in prison.

The Times of India reported the suspect said he was drunk at the time of the incident and that he couldn’t believe what he had done.

A passenger on the flight told the newspaper that he saw the man drinking too much alcohol at the time of the incident and he was incoherent.

Meanwhile, the man’s father, speaking to the Hindustan Times, described the allegations as a “completely untrue case”.

He also said his son “didn’t sleep for 30-35 hours” and fell asleep after drinking.

The incident is believed to have happened last November, although Air India only filed a complaint with the police this week.

The company said the crew did not summon police upon landing in New Delhi because it believed the two people involved had resolved the matter between them.

Meanwhile, Air India said it had given written notice and suspended one pilot and four flight attendants in connection with the incident.

The company has faced criticism on social media for its decision to prevent the man from flying with them for 30 days – a ban that activists say is not long enough.

The airline’s chief executive and chief executive officer, Campbell Wilson, said in a statement: “Air India acknowledges that it could have handled these issues better, both in the air and on the ground, and committed to action.”
