Dragon Age writer David Gaider’s new adventure game Stray Gods: Role Playing Musical will now take the stage on August 3rd. It was formerly known as Chorus – and presumably renamed to avoid sharing RPS tokens with Chorv – But then achieve the goal of crowdfunding and found a publisher, Stray Gods is ready for the limelight.
Stray Gods is set in a hand-drawn “modern fantasy” world, where Greek gods secretly live among us. One day, college dropout Grace gains the mystical powers of The Muse, granting her the gift of musical persuasion, but the gods also accuse her of murder. From here, you’ll unravel a mystery, make impactful choices, and decide whether to charm or power your way to the answer. Luckily, there are a few romantic options out there, and you’ll often be in tune with music when the time is right.
By music, I’m not referring to games like Artistic escape or Wild Heart Sayonara where music accompanies your every step. Stray Gods is a genre of theatrical musical in which speech will intertwine in and out of songs, and characters express themselves with Broadway-worthy voices. Based on your selection, the musical numbers can actually split into different variations, which is great for multiple plays. Best of all, the soundtrack was produced by Austin Wintory, the man behind Journey’s epic series.
However, the voice is really center stage, and your ears may pick up on some of the actors. Actors from The Last Of Us (and millions of other games) like Ashley Johnson, Troy Baker and Laura Bailey are all here, just in case you can’t connect faces to those familiar sounds.
