DR ELLIE CANNON: What can my wife do about her ‘tree leg’?

What can my wife do to deal with her ‘trunk’?

My wife has always been on a diet but can’t seem to lose weight – and now she’s been diagnosed with a condition called lipoed edema.

Her doctors said there was really nothing that could be done, and now she feels very frustrated.

I told her she was beautiful, but she didn’t believe me. Can you suggest anything to help?

Fat edema is a condition that results in the accumulation of fat in certain areas of the body, usually the legs, which can look very disproportionate to the rest of the body and arms.

It is quite common, affecting 1 in 10 women, but is not well understood by the medical community.

Studies show that patients go decades without a diagnosis and are often incorrectly advised to diet.

Is your sense of smell still active two years after catching Covid?

By Dr. Ellie Cannon for Mail on Sunday

This week, I was surprised to learn that two-thirds of people using Covid-19 in the spring of 2020 still have problems with their sense of smell.

And a few say their taste buds still aren’t the same – 18 months after recovering from an infection, according to a Swedish study.

It is a problem that I often see in patients about a month after infection but in most cases it goes away on its own after a few months.

It should not be underestimated: our sense of smell is vital to our ability to taste and enjoy food.

The inability to detect tastes leads to unpleasant, unpleasant meals and can have a significant impact on people’s mental health.

I want to know how many of you are still suffering from distorted or no smell and taste, a year after the infection has passed. Write and let me know at [email protected]

Many people end up believing that their ‘trunk’ is the result of overeating when in fact calorie intake has little to do with it.

Understandably, it makes those who have it feel very self-conscious.

Along with the cosmetic problem, the affected limb may feel heavy and uncomfortable, the skin may be tender and tight, and may even ulcerate.

We don’t know what causes lipoedema, but for many women it metastasizes in their families.

There are similarities to lymphedema, which is an excessive build-up of fluid in the extremities, leading to puffiness — and the treatment for the two conditions is similar.

Compression stockings and moisturizing skin care are really important, as is exercise.

Being active improves mood and circulation, which can help reduce discomfort.

It is important for patients to be in a specialized service, which will usually be with lymphedema nurses.

But services are inconsistent and in some areas no service at all.

Sometimes NHS trusts may accept referrals from outside the area or private patients.

For lipoedema, specialists have recently begun to use specific liposuction methods.

However, I believe this is rarely done on the NHS.

For a condition like this, a supportive partner is a big bonus, but peer support is also important.

I am on medication for high blood pressure, and during my final evaluation, the nurse recommended that I also take magnesium glycinate tablets.

I’m not a huge fan of supplements, but I did. After four months, I can’t see any concrete difference. What is your opinion?

Blood pressure treatment is recommended to prevent serious and potentially fatal health conditions that can be caused by long-term high blood pressure, namely stroke and heart attack.

But this doesn’t just mean taking prescription pills. Losing weight, exercising and adopting a healthy diet, reducing caffeine, salt, and alcohol are all important, as is quitting smoking.

In the body, magnesium dilates blood vessels and thus lowers blood pressure. Most people in the UK get enough from their diet – that’s in dark green leafy vegetables, nuts and whole grains.

Low magnesium can lead to high blood pressure, so if a blood test detects someone has low levels of the mineral, a supplement may be recommended.

This can happen from taking medications such as diuretics, sometimes used for high blood pressure – these drugs increase the amount of water excreted in the urine, which can inadvertently flush nutrients out of the body. body before they have time to be absorbed.

Omeprazole acid indigestion tablets can also block the digestion of certain nutrients, including magnesium.

With any medication or treatment, if there’s no visible benefit after a few months, you should go back to the person who prescribed it and ask if it’s really worth continuing.

There are at least four different types of blood pressure tablets in common use, and if blood pressure remains high, a new combination should be tried.

I have had blepharitis since I was a child – my eyes are often itchy, red and painful. People always ask me if I cried. In my 20s, I was given antibiotics that I took for several years, and they helped.

But the doctor then stopped them and said it was not good to stay there for too long. What can I do to cure this terrible problem?

Blepharitis causes inflammation of the eyelids and usually affects both eyes, typically causing burning, itching, and crusting of the eyelids.

The eyes can look very red, scaly and watery and often people are prone to styes – painful lumps that form on the eyelids.

It prevents people from wearing eye makeup and contact lenses may be impossible.

Blepharitis sometimes occurs with other skin conditions such as dandruff, other types of dermatitis, and rosacea. It may also be associated with dry eyes.

There is no such cure – the only treatment is periodic maintenance therapy to reduce the severity of flare-ups.

We recommend eyelid cleaning – use diluted baby shampoo and warm water twice a day to clean eyelids. You can also purchase special eyelid wipes, although having to constantly remove them can get expensive.

Besides, one of the best ways is to apply a warm compress – soak a washcloth in hot water, wring it out and place it over your eyes, massaging gently. Repeat when the fabric cools a few times.

Done regularly, it will help the glands and oil-producing parts of the eye to work better, thus helping to alleviate the symptoms.

Ultimate help for women who gamble

Tomorrow marks the start of a major charity campaign to tackle gambling addiction in women by Gamble Aware – and it couldn’t have come at a better time.

I am increasingly concerned about the gambling behaviors I see in my patients, mainly due to the proliferation of quick win sites and social media gambling games.

Millions of British women struggle with it, but research shows they are much less likely to recognize the problem and seek help than men.

If you suspect your loved one may have a problem, signs to look out for are hiding gambling habits, losing time on websites – and losing money.

The National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 is a great resource.
