Dr. Daryl Tropea joins TRF


Daryl Tropea, PhD, who has served for more than a decade as the equine program director of the Global Federation of Fauna Sanctus (GFAS) – a highly regarded international accrediting organization that assesses assesses how sanctuaries and rescue organizations meet standards for humane and responsible equine care – joined Thoroughbred Retirement as a Council member its governance, TRF announced Friday.

During his role at GFAS, Dr. Tropea has visited and assessed hundreds of equine facilities in the United States, Canada, Mexico and the United Kingdom, including 14 of the Pension Fund’s Second Chance Programs. Purebred and Farm Sanctuary locations across the United States.

In collaboration with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), she has also presented over 20 workshops emphasizing risk management for equine rescues and sanctuaries. Dr. Tropea has had a lifelong love of horses, serving as president of a horse rescue organization, competing in hunter and diving circuits, and volunteering to help horse owners care for and train their horses.

Dr. Tropea holds a master’s degree in education and a doctorate in epidemiology and biostatistics from the University of Toronto.

Patrick Mackay, President of TRF said: “We are extremely pleased to welcome Dr Tropea to the TRF Board of Directors and feel very fortunate that she has accepted the position. “We look forward to her sharing her vast knowledge of Thoroughbred aftercare with us. Her experience and skills will be invaluable to TRF.”

TRF’s mission is to provide refuge to retired racehorses that are no longer able to compete on the track and save them from possible abandonment, abuse and carnage.

Dr Tropea said: “I am delighted to use my experience and knowledge from recognized animal rescue organizations and post-bred care as a member of the TRF board. After visiting the TRF reserves and Second Chance Programs, I have witnessed the great work of TRF first hand and I am proud to join them in their mission.”
