Dozens killed in stampede at religious event in India

At least 27 people, mostly women, have been killed in northern India in a stampede at a religious ceremony, officials say.

The incident took place at a satsang (Hindu religious event) in Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh state, a senior police official said.

The victims included 23 women and three children, he said, adding that the bodies had yet to be identified.

The cause of the stampede is still unknown.

A police source told the BBC the death toll was likely to rise.

Crowds gather to attend an event honoring the Hindu god Shiva in Mughalgarhi village.

A video shared by news agency PTI shows the injured being taken to hospital for treatment.

“Postmortem procedures are underway and the case is under investigation,” said Satya Prakash, an official in neighbouring Etah district.

Heartbreaking images from the scene of the accident are being circulated online.

Several videos showed the injured being taken to hospital in pickup trucks, tuk tuks and even motorbikes. One clip seen by the BBC showed some bodies left at the entrance of a local hospital as relatives called for help.

Accidents are common at religious events in India, as large crowds gather in confined spaces without following many safety measures.

In 2018, about 60 people died after a train crash into the crowd watching the Dusshera festival, a Hindu festival.

In 2013, a stampede at a Hindu festival in the central state of Madhya Pradesh killed 115 people.
