Double Fine’s new documentary about making Astronaut 2 is a must-see

I like a lot of Double Fine games, but none like me documentary documenting the development of Broken Age. I can’t stop watching funny, intelligent, creative people at work, and Double Fine Adventure offers a one-of-a-kind, candid, and insightful glimpse into game development.

It To be unique until yesterday, when Double Fine released PsychOdyssey, a 32-episode documentary that describes the process of creating astronaut 2. Each episode is typically 20 minutes to an hour long, and I’ve had a great time watching the first three episodes so far.

The first episode uses archival footage and staff interviews to briefly present the development of Astronaut 1 – a story covering the founding of Double Fine, the game boxed by Microsoft and the team was overworked. The story then continues from 2015 in volume 2, when Double Fine was working on a prototype for the VR game Psychonauts rhombus of ruin and started brainstorming for Astronaut 2.

These three episodes total 108 minutes, and by the end, Astronaut 2 only exists as a whiteboard with some possible level ideas. In other words, it’s thorough and doesn’t shy away from presenting the mundane challenges of production and team management. I’m looking forward to any episodes that include studio acquired by Microsoft.

I don’t think you need to have any particular interest in Double Fine games to enjoy this kind of insight into the development process. Heck, I don’t even think you need to care about game development. Watching skilled people perform their skills is fascinating to me regardless of the skill. Starts with here is episode 1.
