Doordash’s new ‘gas rewards’ program comes with attachment chains

Doordash has a gas rewards program to help delivery drivers reduce high fuel costs. While it’s better than nothing, it’s more complicated and possibly less impactful than the fuel surcharges recently added by Uber and Lyft.

Starting March 17, people who drive for Doordash will be able to get a 10% cashback on gas purchases, though only if they sign up to use the company’s own DasherDirect Visa card. On top of that, drivers who drive a certain number of kilometers per week will be eligible for weekly gas rewards that range from $5 to $15 per week. Unlocking the $5 discount requires drivers to complete at least 100-mile trips in a week. Drivers with a total of more than 225 miles of trips will be rewarded with $15 weekly. Some Dashers easily get past that — Grideby that the average courier on the platform traveled anywhere from 75 to 290 miles per day — but others have in recent weeks due to rising gas prices. One of a Dasher shows her earnings to be about $6 an hour after deducting gas prices.

Like most delivery platforms like Instacart and UberEats, Doordash drivers are responsible for fuel costs as well as for the maintenance and care of their vehicles. But earnings can vary greatly each week due to fluctuating demand, the amount customers choose to tip, and the cost of gas. When gas prices are high, motorists often have to perform a quick cost-benefit analysis, like TheRideShareGuy .

Both Uber and Lyft recently gas surcharges to charge high fuel prices – unlike DoorDash which has opted to pass on the additional cost to customers. Uber drivers will receive between $0.45 and $0.55 a ride. A 2019 study by John List, a former chief economist at Uber, found that the average Uber driver makes a week. This amounts to about $13.50 extra per week to help with gas bills. Although insignificant, the extra income may not cover the costs in states like California, where the average has reached $6 a gallon.
