Don’t worry, you’ll be able to read Pentiment’s dialogue without being a manuscript expert

I don’t know about you, but I’m not good at reading Ye Olde Ynglishe. All the letters were curly, and my vision was a bit trashy at first. Like so many specialized fonts, I find calligraphy most difficult to read and, worst of all, barely legible. That’s why I always appreciate when games try to make text as accessible as possible. Typical: Obsidian’s Coming Medieval Mysteries, Ideathere is an option to switch to a legible font.

Pentiment is a medieval adventure like the works of the time.

See, Pentiment is a adventure game Set 25 years in 16th century Bavaria and using highly stylized graphics makes the whole content feel like playing a medieval manuscript brought to life. That means a large amount of the game’s text and dialogue is presented in fancy calligraphy that’s well-suited to the time period. Obsidian shared on Twitter that the selection of stylized fonts or Easy Read will pop up when you first start playing Pentiment, and you can also enable or disable it in the settings.

I’ve been curious to get my historic favorite feet on the Pentiment since it announced at the Xbox & Bethesda Showcase in June. However, in my head I always thought that my visual issues would make the game harder to dig into. It’s reassuring to know that I can always set it to an Easy-to-Read font. Accessibility is super important, so it’s always nice to see efforts like Disco Elysium’s dyslexia friendly fontForza Horizon 5’s sign language interpreteror Obsidian’s pretty simple readability options here.

Emotional journey up Steam, Microsoft Store and PC Game Pass on November 15 for £15/$20/€20.
