Don’t portray religious processions as source of riots: SC | India News

NEW DELHI: Don’t portray all religious processions as a source of riots, says Supreme Court on Friday while dismissing a PIL seeking strict regulation of religious processions across the country.
Bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justice P.S. Narasimha denied the defense saying it was a matter of law and order and could be resolved by the state police and the District Judges.
The PIL filed by the NGO Citizens for Justice and Peace asks for guidelines to regulate religious processions across the country where people brandish weapons.
CJI Chandrachud said India’s cultural diversity varies from district to district and there could not be uniform guidelines for regulating religious processions as he dismissed the PIL.
Senior supporter CU Singh on behalf of the NGO told the bench that processions were brought out brandishing swords and guns during religious festivals.
He argues that riots have become common during such processions that take place during religious festivals.
Why do we want to portray that riots take place during carnivals, the bench asked.
Supreme Court says religious processions are performed during Ganpati festival in maharashtraBut there was no riot.
“Why would you pick up some riot incidents in a religious festival to paint everything with the same brush? Try to see the positive…”, said the bench.
The plea sought to prohibit the display of weapons and ammunition in such parades.
