Dominos failed to impress Italy; Business returns after 7 years

Domino’s is possibly the most popular pizza chain globally. It has more than 18,800 stores around the world (according to 2021 data), catering to patrons of all ages. In fact, it is one of those fast foods that you will go anywhere and wherever you go. But did you know, Domino’s can’t make its mark in Italy – the land of pizza and pasta?! You heard us. A recent news, making rounds on the internet, said the chain is withdrawing from Italy after being unable to dominate the market. According to a report published in the BBC, Domino’s Pizza has closed its last stores in the country after the company (which operates Domino’s stores) filed for bankruptcy.

CNN added that Domino’s started doing business in Italy in 2015, signing a 10-year franchise contract with ePizza – the franchise operator of Domino’s Italy. Since then, they have opened 800 stores across the country. The Michigan-based brand began serving traditional Italian food (especially pizza and pasta), adding an American twist. A common example of the same is pizza with a pineapple top layer. However, this is not good for people in Italy, who prefer the classic pizza way to ‘twisted cakes’. As a result, business is affected, leading to closure. “According to an Italian food website Agrodolce, ePizza filed for bankruptcy in April 2022 and all stores ceased delivery service from April 20,” the Guardian reports.

The tweet has received over 194,000 views so far, with people reacting strongly to the news. While some complained about Domino’s having a “crippled toppings”, others criticized the “bad crust”.
