Dominic Thiem given Australian Open wildcard

MELBOURNE—Former Australian Open finalist Dominic Thiem has been given a wild ride to next month’s Grand Slam after missing last year’s tournament through injury, organizers said Friday.

The Austrian stunned 2020 champion Novak Djokovic before losing in five sets in a classic final.

Former world number three Thiem then had his Grand Slam breakthrough at that year’s US Open.

He struggled with a serious wrist injury next season but the strong 29-year-old returned this year, improving his world ranking to 102 from outside the top 350 in June.

French athlete Luca Van Assche was also awarded a wildcard, while Americans Taylor Townsend and Christopher Eubanks and French female Diane Parry were awarded wildcards in the women’s tournament.

Organizers say four outstanding representatives – two men and two women – will be awarded next week.
