Dominic Raab says infamous PMQs wink was not at Angela Rayner | Politics News

Dominic Raab told Sky News his controversial wink at the Prime Minister’s Question last month was not at Angela Rayner.

The wink, apparently directed at Labour’s deputy leader, led Mr Raab to be accused of sexism on social media.

The two MPs will face off in Johnson’s absence, while the prime minister leaves the country to attend a NATO summit.

When investigated into the incident on Sky News’ Sophy Ridge program on Sunday, the Deputy Prime Minister said he was in fact winking at Scotland’s secretary of state Ian Murray.

I winked at Ian Murray,” said Mr Raab.

He continued: “By the way, I must say you are right, she [Angela Rayner] is great value in all of this.

“She’s very lively. I mean, it’s the complete opposite of Keir.

Asked why he winked at Mr Murray, Mr Raab said: “I think something was said about Angela Rayner standing in a leadership contest against Keir and he said, I think I was heard him say something like, ‘what’s up with that?’

“So anyway, it’s all part of the shear and thrust process.

Social media was flooded with allegations of misconduct after footage of the wink was posted last month.

At the time, Ms Rayner said the wink was “a bit weird” and made the public feel “a bit creepy”.

At the time, it was claimed that, off camera, Mr Murray made an inaudible comment to onlookers at home in which he mumbled that nothing would be “bad” if she Rayner ran for leader of the Labor Party.
